Trump surprises with pledge to end military exercises in South Korea

EOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration on Tuesday that he intended to end joint military exercises with South Korea took South Korean and U.S. military officials by surprise.

Although the Pentagon said Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was consulted ahead of time, current and former U.S. defense officials expressed concern at the possibility that the United States would unilaterally halt military exercises without an explicit concession from North Korea lowering the threat from Pyongyang.

“I’m sort of stunned about how much we gave up and how little we got in return,” said one former official, saying the decision “borders on irresponsible” and would erode readiness and diminish the credibility of the U.S.-South Korean alliance.

Trump called South Korea military exercises 'provocative,' the same way North Korea described them

US President Donald Trump used the same language as Kim Jong-un when suspending the joint South Korea military exercises, calling them “provocative”.

He also said the “war games” were “expensive”. The plan to freeze military exercises may have been a concession for getting North Korea to the Singapore summit in the first place.

Last month Pyongyang had said the joint US and South Korean Air Force drills, which included fighter jets, was a “rehearsal for [an] invasion of the North and a provocation amid warming inter-Korean ties…[it is an] intentional military provocation running counter to the positive political development on the Korean Peninsula”.

I am no fan of Lil’ Kim but he is 100% correct that the US is their main enemy and threat to how he likes to run things in the surreal world on North Korea

And he is one of the main threats to the West. Sadly. No easy answers.

Imo, it just Kim throwing something at the USA's incoming new admin to see how they might react. Obviously, at some point P.E. Biden will have to address the NK issue and we will just have to wait and see. What I think is more important is the question of whether NK is really extending/increasing its nuclear deterrent program or not.

There's little doubt North Korea is developing more advanced nuclear weapons. But Donald & Jong-un will always have Singapore.????

North Korea's missile and nuclear programme

North Korea is widely believed to have missiles capable of striking long-range targets, including potentially the US mainland.

In October 2020, it unveiled what appeared to be one of the world's largest intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

I think that this is just a case of getting your revenge in early, as in hurting the other guy before he hurts you. In the case of Biden, I think that is a bit stupid of Kim but there you are. But then he has to create the "evil other" in order to keep his own people on side. It is Totalitarianism 101. Alway have an enemy that you can blame and use to scare the population.

I didn't mention or imply Pres. Trump but what the next admin might do and so your comment is of little value.

So you didn't write "What I think is more important is the question of whether NK is really extending/increasing its nuclear deterrent program or not."?

And I don't understand your comment about Trump. I didn't mention him in the post in question.

And how did it turn out? What was actually accomplished? North Korea's nuclear forces are more formidable than ever. North Korea just denounced the US as its #1 foe. Ya think maybe that article is a bit out of date?

Can you show where another president has done more?

Absolutely:

Deal Freezes Pyongyang’s Nuclear Program
The United States and North Korea sign the Agreed Framework [PDF], in which North Korea commits to freezing its illicit plutonium weapons program and halting construction on nuclear reactors, in Geneva. In exchange, the United States pledges to provide sanctions relief, aid, oil, and two light-water reactors for civilian use. Earlier in the year, the CIA assessed that North Korea had produced one or two nuclear weapons.

Because of thaivisa rules, I can only post this 1 paragraph. But there's plenty more to see. All you have to do is click on the link.

And what I can't do is show you any President who has done less. Trump accomplished nothing.

Are you serious?  Trump made more progress with North Korea than any previous president.

If you count photo ops as progress, then Trump was #1!  Otherwise, he made things worse.  Gave Kim the global stage, something he desperately wanted.

Haha. But I do:

North Korea was Trump’s chief foreign policy boast, but things got worse on his watch

Days before Donald Trump was sworn in as president, Barack Obama gave him an urgent warning: North Korea was a serious threat and might soon be capable of marrying a nuclear warhead to a long-range missile that could reach American shores.

Almost four years after that meeting at the White House, as Trump faces the prospect of possibly turning over the presidency to Joe Biden, there is little evidence the danger has been reduced, despite the most sustained and aggressive diplomacy of Trump’s tenure.

If anything, North Korea poses a greater threat, according to Korea specialists: The country has tested and developed more weapons; its leader, Kim Jong Un, has become less isolated; and international resolve to confront North Korea has weakened after Trump’s three meetings with Kim.

Too lazy to feed a troll.  If you really want to understand the history of NK, do some research.  Go way back.  And how many previous administrations failed to deal with Kim.  Lots of mistakes made.  By lots of different parties.

In the end, he's the leader of a terrorist country.  Nuclear weapons is only one of the terrorist acts he is carrying out.  Drugs, counterfeiting, hacking, selling weapons illegally, etc, etc, etc.

Haha.  So the same as all the rest.  Great.
