BANGKOK (NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister has voiced the view that the COVID-19 situation in Thailand does not yet require executive powers be granted to the Prime Minister or a curfew.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam remarked that the COVID-19 situation is currently in the first phase and does not require executive powers be granted to the Prime Minister, noting a sub-committee of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) is evaluating circumstances on a weekly basis, as are provincial communicable disease committees. The government has been taking measures under the Emergency Decree to set general guidelines but acknowledges that different provinces have so far been able to maintain control.

The DPM pointed out Samut Sakhon is poised to be highlighted as a model in resolving a COVID-19 outbreak.

On Municipal Council elections scheduled for late March, DPM Wissanu, said provincial Election Commissions are evaluating the situation while explaining that the law allows for the elections to be delayed. The Election Commission at present has decided that polls can still take place, such as provincial administration elections that recently took place. Health measures such as limiting crowding, social distancing and disinfection will have to be enforced if voting takes place but if the date is moved, the new date will have to be heavily publicized to ensure a proper turnout.

Let's hope they immediately set up testing stations across the country as essential approved people move between provinces infected. Employ unemployed to operate for periods housed in the vacant accommodation at these stations. These tests need to be free and operate between all major and minor locations to reduce numbers before 7000 a week infected not 2000.
