BANGKOK, Dec 19 (TNA) – Almost 10 police officers were allegedly involved in smuggling migrant workers across the Thai-Myanmar border and the investigation is underway, said National Police Chief, Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk.

He said the initial investigation on labour smuggling in Kanchanaburi’s Sangkhlaburi district found that state officials and almost ten police officers to be involved in aiding illegal labour smuggling or being negligent over it.

Criminal prosecution and disciplinary action will be taken against the culprits and the investigation is also being conducted in Tak’s Mae Sot district, bordering Myanmar.

Hardly surprising, after all this country runs on a type of corruption economy.

A policeman's job is vastly underpaid, yet much sought after, because of the unique opportunity to create wealth from the power of the position. This system thrives in many areas of Thai life, but particularly in government where the rewards can be huge.

While the expats rage in indignation, the citizens are not ignorant of the system but accept it as part of normal life, while hoping one of their offspring can jump onto the gravy train.

This system is not going to change in a hurry to, for example, some version of the British style of economy, with it's more hidden type of corrupt practice.

The Thai system failed In this instance, because the employers still need workers with whom they can maximize profits by paying peanuts. The smugglers are too greedy to pause their income, and all parties are generally too dumb to consider the ramifications of people smuggling during a pandemic.

Who would have thought the word "almost" would create the most discussion on this thread.

Answer:

ALMOST anyone who reads the dross on ThaiVisa regularly.

So 9 plus a midget.  Makes sense as someone small enough needs to be able to walk under the fences, and distract the army......
