(Reuters) - The British government will on Wednesday announce plans for limited hotel quarantine for Britons returning from 30 high-risk countries covered by a travel ban, the Times reported on Wednesday.

These countries include South America, Portugal, Cape Verde and South Africa, the report added.

Separately, Johnson has rejected calls by interior minister Priti Patel for a temporary closure of borders, the newspaper reported, adding Patel had pushed for a travel ban to stop potentially vaccine resistant strains of coronavirus being imported into the country.

Johnson has said he was looking at the option of introducing quarantine hotels for those coming to Britain to prevent the risk of "vaccine-busting" new coronavirus variants entering the country.

The bosses of airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and easyJet criticised on Tuesday a possible plan for mandatory quarantine in hotels for some or all arrivals to Britain and called for a support package.

Britain has suffered a sharp rise in infections and deaths in the new year, fuelled partly by a new more highly contagious variant of the virus first identified in southeast England.

The death toll in Britain from the coronavirus pandemic passed 100,000 people on Tuesday.

I don't see how it is legal. No country can refuse to accept its citizens back, so what if you can't afford this quarantine? Refused to be allowed to travel or barred from entering?

Probably <deleted>ty government facility, like everywhere else...

You are on forum about Thailand, country which has this system from the day 1.

Quick and decisive action.

It will be implemented a full year after UK first discovered covid and after 100,000++ dead.

No flies on Boris.

 Shame they didn’t stop their own citizens leaving the UK back in March when they discovered the new highly infectious UK covid super strain.

That decision would have saved a lot of lives.

But you can see where they have been.

And the reffo's the French navy have escorted across can bypass

hotel quarantine, so finally UK is taking same path as thailand, which is proven that it does help a lot.

that picture of people queuing at the airport, it doesn't look like they are well prepared for containing the virus at all????

So now do we have any doubts about Boris & his Merry Men being ditherers from the start ?

This should have been implemented end of March last year

Quarantine is a big racket. Beaucoup bucks are being made on this horse<deleted>.

Too little, too late again.

I'm a Boris fan, but he needs to do things faster for this virus.  Committees won't do it, make a decision and push it through.

says the next prime minister

We left Thailand last April.

At BKK:

  • temperature taken before allowed into terminal;
  • all staff wearing at least a mask;
  • had to wear a mask at all times in terminal except while eating in coffee shop;
  • temperature taken again at check in;
  • temperature taken again at gate.

On flight (EVA Air):

  • had to wear mask at all times unless eating or drinking;
  • cabin crew in full PPE at all times.

At LHR, even though UK supposed to have been in lockdown:

  • masks worn by some staff, airport, UK Border Force and HMRC, but by no means all;
  • like above, mask wearing by passengers was also voluntary;
  • no temperature or other health check at all, just given a leaflet saying to contact NHS 111 if developed symptoms.

What about Australia?

I don't know, but I would imagine they should have questions that need to be answered, leaving their nationals stranded the way they have.
