A Chinese businessman has declared Thais not just kind but very honest.

He should know - Mr Tan Shaoyu, 38, has been in Thailand for 30 years, reported Daily News.

He had owed an orchard man 180,000 baht for coconuts. But unfortunately an employee of his firm had pressed the wrong button on the account number and had not checked the name resulting in it going to the wrong person.

Before the error became apparent the recipient of the money - former Ratchaburi area councillor Wasuphon Weeratrakoon, 25, had already gone to the Damnoen Saduak police to report the matter and ask for their help in returning it.

Mr Tan declared: "In my thirty years in Thailand I have found that Thais are kind and very honest and this only proves that contention".

Mr Tan was pictured by the media handing over what looked like a bottle of Chinese wine or spirit to show his appreciation as a policeman looked on.

Once i was extremely cynical about these frequent "taxidriver returns forgotten money to Japanese tourist" kinda articles.

But if you dig deeper with google, turns out these stories are true.  Thais might find pleasure overcharging farangs, but hardly would keep a lost wallet or a lot of cash forgotten. They take pride in returning lost money, to keep it would be stealing and make them a thief, and that is not taken lightly.
