Thailand keeping a close eye on situation in Myanmar: Wissanu

File photo shows deposed Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Thailand is monitoring closely the situation in Myanmar, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Monday.

He said the political situation there had confused countries worldwide.

Meanwhile, the hashtags #SaveMyanmar and #รัฐประหาร (coup d'etat) were trending on Twitter today.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon posted a Facebook message on Monday, asking Thais stranded in Myanmar to closely follow information released by the embassy.

For more information, contact the embassy on: (+951) 222784, (+951) 226728 or (+959) 797002801.

According to a Washington Post report, Myanmar's military said on Monday that it had taken control of the country and declared a state of emergency for a year, hours after detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of her ruling National League for Democracy in a pre-dawn coup against the democratically elected government.

Later, US White House spokesperson Jen Psaki issued a statement, urging the Myanmar military and all other parties to adhere to democratic norms and the rule of law, and to release those detained today.

"The United States opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of recent elections or impede Myanmar's democratic transition, and will take action against those responsible if these steps are not reversed. We are monitoring the situation closely and stand with the people of Burma, who have already endured so much in their quest for democracy and peace," the statement said.

I don't think so...

<deleted> here's me sat here on the other side of the world awaiting a job interview for Yangon! I get the impression that a higher power wishes me to stay out of SE Asia.

Job in Pattaya = Pandemic

Job in Myanmar = Coup

What next? A Cambodian chaotic conflagration!

Can you give them some pointers to clarify how it should be done!

Yes, you do that, Mr. Wissanu. Just don't get any ideas.

But then again, I doubt Myanmar can teach you lot anything about how military coups are pulled off. You've got more than enough experience of your own, having a not so shabby 13 successful military takeovers under your belt since 1932 (plus a handful of failed ones):

1932

1933

1939

1947

1951

1957

1958

1971

1976

1977

1991

2006

2014

He is a comedian should have been on the stage, maybe if he was he would be better at it than his present farcical situation.????????

The US has caused millions of deaths in South East Asia with its flawed foreign policy, why should we be listening to them now?

Well getting rid of who turned out to be yet one more hypocrite of a self styled 'saver of the Nation' in Ang San what's her face,  I'm not surprised that they are keeping out of it.

For what? To get some good tips in preparation for the next inevitable coup?

Myanmar , Cambodia , Laos and Thailand  all seem to be unstable countries , possibly on the list for a Chinese acquisition after Hong Kong and Taiwan are sorted out ?

I think you used the wrong word "possibly". They are already at the top of the list of acquisitions.

Possibly - another headline from today's TVF:-

ws West condemns Myanmar coup, China's response more muted

China is established in Burma and plunders the country's natural resources, and I quote, "Of these, natural gas, rubies, jade, and timber logs are the most valuable and currently provide a substantial proportion of national income". There are, of course, the huge Chinese Casino complexes along neighboring borders as well. Since December 2019, illegal logging within China has been banned so the unscrupulous look to Burma for wood, teak in particular. There is no doubt the Burmese generals want their pockets refilling!! My sympathy goes to any stranded tourists still in the country.

hard to swallow for people who are used to poke their nose in other countries affairs and start wars if a country is too independent, but yeah, its a domestic affair whats happening now, like it or not.
