webfact
Over 650,000 Migrant Workers Register in Amnesty Program Paphamon Arayasukawat BANGKOK (NNT) - More than 650,000 migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar have applied to stay in the kingdom legally for 2 more years under the government’s labor amnesty program. Labor Minister Suchart Chomklin said these workers will have to take a COVID-19 test and submit their identification details, along with other required documents to the Labor Ministry by April 16. He also warned that the government will take legal action against illegal migrant workers who refused to register with authorities, as well as their employers. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-02-16 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
Mike Rodik
I guess those don't have to show 400k/800k, so why do farangs have to again ?

The answer to your question lies in the subject title: migrant WORKERS. Not migrant RETIREES. The 400k/800k does not apply if you stay in Thailand on a non-Imm 'B' visa with a work permit, or other working visa.
welshguy
Hmmmmmmmmnnn , So 650,000 migrant workers who will need a covid test.? If they want to apply for the government labour amnesty program...650,000 need to apply, and have had covid tests in 2 months? I doubt Thailand has done 650.,000 covid tests in the last year! So good luck with doing these 650,000 covid tests by April 16! Edited February 16, 2021 by welshguy spelling
connda
Interesting who is allowed to enter Thailand illegally and then be rewarded with a 2 year stay. Of course tomorrow we'll hear stories about the "bad farang" who overstayed for 122 days due to dementia and is dragged to IDC to languish on the floor. And all the while those of us with families are under a microscope as we dutifully report to Immigration annually so they can search for a reason to kick us out of the country and destroy our family units. Well. Male foreigners that is. Thailand needs a 650,000 foreign labor force with illegals being granted a 2 year free stay. Man, I do not want to here any whinging about out of work Thais barely being able to feed themselves. You could always go work in a canning factory in Samut Sakhorn if you wish and "opt-out" of the normal visa requirements.

Err, with a Thai family and a legal non-o/ marriage extension a 'farang' still would need a work permit even for volunteer work. For the 'b' non-imm visa also need a little more than an under the minimum wage salary of some farm or factory work. And finally, if a legally staying farang man with Thai family require 400k a year to show without fail, for supposed living expenses, a Burmese or Lao illegal shouldn't be treated differently, insurance, hospital cost just the same. Quite unfair to ask from and punish the legal group staying here, and give amnesty/reward the illegals. ( Although it is a global phenomenon lately). Just bcos by the look they are closer to a Thai, that shouldn't offer a special status. An immigrant is an immigrant, the difference is legal or illegal, nothing else. But this is Thailand, and the general decided to stay xenophobic, like the other governments before. Same same. But different immigrant.
Sir Dude
We are not immigrants and our visas say so whether you are married, retired or working. We are "Aliens" ... whatever that equates to in their unique minds. Edited February 16, 2021 by Sir Dude

I believe the difference here being that they are citizens of countries within the ASEAN group, which have agreements and rules that do not apply to citizens of countries outside the group.
