So another manager leaves his club.

Where could be Jewell's next port of call be (Man City ???) and who is next in the chopping block I wonder.

I think Dave Whelan's comment on how he wants Jewell to stay at Wigan for life but wouldnt stand in his way if a big team came in for him raises a few possibilities.

Wigan confirmed to BBC North West that Jewell had left his post and they will hold a news conference at 1500 BST.

Jewell's exit comes after the drama of beating Sheffield United 2-1 on Sunday to ensure Wigan's top-flight status.

He has been linked with Manchester City where manager Stuart Pearce could make way if a takeover of the club succeeds.

Jewell joined Wigan in June 2001 from Sheffield Wednesday.

He guided The Latics to the League One title in 2002-03 and in 2004-05 they finished runners-up to Sunderland in the Championship to reach the top flight for the first time in their history.

Under Jewell, Wigan surprised many pundits by surviving comfortably in their first season, finishing 10th and also reaching the Carling Cup final.

Previously, Jewell had taken Bradford into the Premiership where he masterminded a similar last-day survival for the Bantams.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan offered Jewell a job for life at the JJB Stadium outfit last year but also said he would not stand in his way if he had an offer from a bigger club.

I think that he would want to give Sheff Utd a miss ,,when Neil leaves that is (and I have a feeling it wont be long ).

A few Geordies are looking his way as well. He deserves a shot at a club who can attract bigger name players but Man City and Newcastle might be looking for somebody who can do the business on a tight budget. They are up to their lugholes in debt. Good luck to the fella. All those last day survival attempts have probably taken a toll on his health (and hair) so I hope he has an easier time with his next job. :o

Breaking news apparently is that Stuart Pearce has been sacked and that Mark Hughes has left Blackburn.

No authentication as yet.

Stuart Pearce has been sacked by Man City , maybe Paul Jewell will have a new job quicker than he thought ( or maybe he already knew ).

No word as yet on the Mark Hughes situation but if that's true that's major. I just wonder if Man U win the cup final will Alex step down and sparky gets the job........ :o .

Wonder if a certain ex Thai p.m had anything to do with psycho sacking :D:D:D .

Hutchings steps up from assistant manager, as he did at Bradford where he lasted only 12 Premiership games before he was sacked in November 2000.

"People will say he has no name - but I know Chris Hutchings," said Whelan.

"I can't spend a few weeks looking around. Next season starts now. I know Chris was not a success at Bradford but it has not stopped me respecting him."

Hutchings was promoted on Monday following Jewell's surprise decision to step down - less than 24 hours after Wigan secured their Premiership survival.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan

The 50-year-old took the job at Bradford in very similar circumstances, replacing Jewell after the Bantams escaped the drop on the last day of the 1999/2000 season.

However, Bradford won one of 12 league games and Hutchings was replaced by Stuart McCall, who could not save the club from relegation.

Despite that record, Whelan has opted to give Hutchings his chance, offering him an initial 12-month contract and a reported summer transfer kitty of £20m.

The Latics chairman said: "I'd have had 20 applications if I'd put it on the market but I wouldn't know what they're like.

"Chris Coleman would have applied, I've no doubt, and he did a good job at Fulham and I was surprised when they sacked him but I don't know him.

"Chris Hutchings has learned a hel_l of a lot from Paul Jewell over the last six years. I'm right behind him and I'll give him my full backing."

Wigan defender Matt Jackson insists the players are also supportive of Hutchings, who will be introduced to the media at 1030 BST on Tuesday.

Jackson told BBC Radio Five Live: "It's tinged with sadness, with Paul Jewell going, but we look forward to a new era with Chris Hutchings.

"It was a shock to everybody, the manager came in and made the announcement at midday on Monday. It's an emotional time. "The lads have got a great relationship with Chris Hutchings and he is part of every success we had here. He knows the Premier League very well from his former experiences."

Too tight to bring in an experienced manager but not concerned about wasting money on lawyers and whinging to the media. :o
