Thai PM set to get first jab - AstraZeneca - as first batch of two vaccines arrive today

Featured Replies

Prayut is no difference to any other world leader who gets it first...

...however, the AZ vaccine showed up out of the blue...

...or did it?

He is so buddy buddy with China... why doesn't he get the Sinovac?

  • Maybe he will get both, just to be sure.   One in each arm as left and right are not aware what the other is doing.

  • uh huh, sure there wasn't; favoritism doesnt exist in thailand

Not even a mighty Thai general is brave or foolhardy enough to take the Chinese shot. Quite telling!

well you realy did not think the general would get the China jab  and what about happy face which one is he going to have? I would love to have a bet on it

Thanks. I knew about this but there has been some question about the use and efficacy of the AZ vaccine in the elderly (65+) as well.

The latest data from vaccinations given in Scotland is that  the AZ is very effective at preventing serious sickness to over 65's even slightly better than the Pfizer jab.

What Irony. Our fearless PM, remember him- the general who had no political ambitions, went with a "dirty farang" vaccine rather than one from his big brothers from the North.

Actually it's the other way around. Astra Zeneca has not been tested on anyone older than 56 (sometimes quoted 56, sometimes 65), and it's mostly this vaccine that is not recommended for anyone older due to lack of testing. As for testing, it was probably the most shoddy certification testing attempt ever witnessed, with wrong doses administered, after wrong period of time for second dose, etc. Good part that came out of it was that lower doses were more effective, and longer periods of time between shots make vaccine more effective as well. Alas only 22% effective against South African strain...

Still, many times things are discovered by accident. Like strongest glue ever Post-Its. But this is something getting injected into our bodies. Surely they could have a little bit better testing plan and execution? Or has Oxford's academic skills all gone down the drain?

The picture is a bit confusing. Apparently the restriction on age limit for AZ vaccine was made by a German advisory committee/EU. This https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55302595 does not say the same. One wonders if the problems between the vaccine deliveries etc. UK/EU had something to do with it.

Anutin should take the vacccination. Let the PM get jabbed.

How did the PM decide to go with the farang vaccine over the Chinese vaccine? Coin toss?

No.  By reading ThaiVisa forums he's found out from the majority of forum members that the Sinovac in akin to injecting toilet water so has sought out AZ's experimental vaccine.

Just yesterday they came out right here on TV and said Sinovac is limited to ages 18-59, so the PM can't take it.  But so many TV commenters will take any excuse to hate on anything Thai.

C'mon, it's staring you in the face !

I had the first AZ jab last week in the UK and I'm retired.

The first 4 that should have gotten the deleted vaccine is the 2 that can't be named payute and dimwit

Why did you ask the question then?

Where do you see a definitive answer to that question??  Can you say precisely how the PM and those advising him arrived at the decision?  Was it exclusive to age recommendations or was it due to the fact that the chinese vaccine is, well, chinese and that there is some question regarding the data?  I'm guessing it's the latter.  It would be if I was making the decision

Why should Thailand be in a hurry to get the vaccines. There are still very few cases. America didn't get the vaccines until after 250,000 people died. The UK didn't get them until well after they had the highest per capita rates of deaths in the world. America now has half a million deaths and an Thailand has about 89.
Your post is rather pathetic Thai bashing and woefully ignorant

WHO also recommends AZ vaccine in the over 65's

"WHO recommend the use of Oxford AZ for all people over 18 years old including those over 65 ( as is also compatible with the advice from the European Medicines Agency)."

Anutin won’t need a vaccine anyway as he is immune from what i see .

Just about every time I see him on tv he is the only one not wearing a mask ! ????

Maybe he's a "dirty unwashed farang" doppelganger?

during 8 months a dozen of countries thought that they could stay safe . Their governments were not quick to order vaccines.

The thai medical world is not unanimous with efficiency  and side effects in a long time about ARNm vaccines. In congresses, they are a little more than 50% to think :wait and see in other countries . Maybe a wise advice in this period where the situation is coming to be under control without any injected dose ?!?!

The reason he is getting the first jab is...................................

Can't be anything to do with safety, millions of the jab have been given out already.

That's one health worker, or elderly person who won't now get the jab, so few have been ordered by Thailand.

Good! Let him be the first. He could have mine too; free!

The Sinovac vaccine is will be administered to people aged between 18 and 59. Lung Too is 66.

And elsewhere (Germany) Astra Zeneca is not administered to people older than 65

You don’t think the Person running the country can be considered a key worker ????

Regardless of your politics and whether or not you agree with how he got there and how he administers office the Prime-minister or president of any nation along with key members of the administration, opposition and military will be high on the list of those receiving a vaccine - certainly higher up than a nurse or regular elderly person, that not only life, its common sense....

He was supposed to get the Chinese jab to show it was so safe. Not a good example for his people

Which is really a shame since the science does not back up that decision.

https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n523

'The results, available as a preprint, showed that four weeks after the first doses of the Pfizer BioNTech and Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines were administered the risk of hospitalisation from covid-19 fell by up to 85% (95% confidence interval 76 to 91) and 94% (95% CI 73 to 99), respectively.

The researchers from universities across Scotland and Public Health Scotland told a Science Media Centre press briefing on 22 February that their results were “very encouraging and have given us great reasons to be optimistic for the future.” But emphasised that the study should not be used to compare the two vaccines as the study had not been set up to look at differences between them, was not randomised, follow-up was longer for people who received the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine because it was approved first, and the two vaccines were given to different patient populations. Specifically, the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine was more likely to be given to very elderly people.'

That's a weak excuse by Prayut because he doesn't want the Sinovac vaccine injected into him and nor would I.  The Sinovac was not trialed in over 59s but none of the trial data has been published anyway and what was unofficially released by Brazil suggests that it is barely effective.  Yet Thailand is willing to approve it on this basis and will use it on front line health workers, which is the exact group that Brazil found not to work properly in. What a disgrace.

The Astra Zeneca was not trialed on over 65s.  So Prayut's reason for refusing the Sinovac applies equally to the Astra Zeneca, given that he is 67, although Astra Zeneca's trial data was at least prublished in a peer reviewed journal.

In addition they haven't said how they suddenly got 17,000 doses of Astra Zeneca and where it came from (Italy, India?).  There is a total lack of transparency and a concerted effort to through sand in the eyes of the general public.

My god

when will this government put the people 1st

so typical of them to make sure they are safe and forget Thai people I hope the people who survive remember when it come to voting next

Anutin has not explained why the criticism of the government's vaccine policies by the opposition delayed the arrival of Astra Zeneca's vaccine.  Did he tell AZ to delay shipment until he was sure he could handle the criticism.  Surely it's the opposition's job to criticise the government and he would be doing exactly the same, if he were in the opposition.

Rather than hogging the first decent non-Chinese or Russian vaccines off the plane, the government's ministers should wait until the very last Thai citizens have been vaccinated to show responsibility like a ship's captain seeing his passengers are safe instead of jumping in the first life boat and scarpering.

Hate that word jab (shot) thank you

I feel the complete opposite, a shot should be given in a small glass ,not a syringe .

Sweet Jesus !  You couldn't make this up...... Uncle Tuu get's the good stuff from them dirty farangs and the rest of you will get the Chinese brake fluid...... and you'll pay for it........    Only in Thailand......
