The provincial chief of the natural resources and environment office, in Thailand’s northeastern province of Mukdahan, has been arrested by police for allegedly receiving two million baht in bribes from a Laotian timber merchant, in return for facilitating the return of precious Siamese Rosewood timber, worth about 600 million baht, impounded in the province.

Pol Maj-Gen Panya Pinsuk, deputy commissioner of Central Investigation Bureau, and Mr. Chivaparb Chivatham, deputy director-general of the Royal Forestry Department, told the media on Thursday of the arrests of 58-year old Mr. Suradet Akkarach and Ms. Pan Saengviroon, the seizure of two million baht, in 1,000 baht notes, and four smartphones.

According to Pol Maj-Gen Panya, Mr. Kamsavai Pommachan, a Laotian timber merchant, lodged a complaint with CIB police on February 24th, claiming that Suradet had approached him with an offer to facilitate the return of the seized Siamese Rosewood timber in exchange for two million baht.

probe is still necessary to ensure fairness to all concerned and to determine how the proceeds of this catch will be divided... ????

2 million on a deal worth 650 million looks like very poor negotiation skills. That, or the other 98 million is yet to be found

Shocked... 555

2 million to get 600 million in timber...that's a pretty good return on investment.

At the very end of the article you will find the committee probing around as well as the inactive post thing.

No its not bad at all as the court has ordered the release of the wood. This was just a leech trying to get some money. I am happy he is caught this way. I wish there were more people who would help to combat corruption by using marked bills and help of the goverment. If (and that is a big if) this guy is convicted and punished it would send a good signal. Though I remain sceptical.

I would have asked for at least a 100 millions..

2 million! Cheapskate, he needs a lesson from Anutin and his peers on how to cream the system

A very small drop in a very big bucket. LOS needs lots and lots of these minor grabs of small offenders before they will make a dent in the corruption problem and before they will impress anybody

There are those who would say that 2mTHB, is what he owned up to after greasing multiple palms... One thing which is true in my experience is that however bad you think the corruption problem in TL is, it's worse, it's a way of life.

They just cant help themselves , can they ?

Its been going on for long and for so many that they see it as an entitlement.

They honestly believe they are due the money because of position.

Scum bags.

Any corrupt government official should be locked up for a very long time. Corruption is the main problem in Thailand and despite promises from the present government it is still the same, or worse.

Timber was seized in 2006 so it's only taken him 15 years to go through the courts to get his own property back. No wonder he baulked at paying over 2 million having spent all that time to win his case.

Seems he isn't Thai, as "no Thai would do that"

Execution is the only cure.  Set a precedent.

A probe is only so far as they insert it. Some will be probe free.

We will have to keep a Watch on this one

I am sure following the probe a sincere Wai will settle the obvious misunderstanding and monies will be distributed accordingly.

caught ? then its the girl not them...i hear it is the talk of the Thai people who

work at the Condo complex. if you are a bit merry and visit their bar. you might be next.  it might be on a smaller scale but these SC*M have been at it for years.

Don't the Chinese execute these sorts of offenders?

It almost seems worthwhile to support the colonisation of Thailand.
