TAT launches places of worship tourism campaign

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched a new tourism campaign highlighting temples and other places of worship, offering tourism products for specific tourists while promoting the preservation of Thai traditions.

 

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) campaign is known as the WAT, short for Worship Activities Traditition, as a preparation for the country’s anticipated reopening to tourists.

 

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said today the TAT has created 15 tourism routes across the country that lead tourists to places of worship and other tourism attractions, with a connection to local communities.

 

Speaking at the press conference, the Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, said the new campaign will offer domestic tourists information on places of worship that they can visit and pay their respects to, while at the same time experiencing local cultures and traditions in each area.

 

The Minister of Culture Ittipol Khunpluem says religious tourism attractions are considered key assets in Thailand’s cultural resources, while the WAT campaign also helps promote the preservation of Thai culture and helps local businesses generate income.

 

Prime Minister’s Office Minister Anucha Nakasai said today the WAT campaign combines traditional beliefs with tourism to deliver new faith tourism options.

 

The National Office of Buddhism has already made preparations at these places of worship to welcome visitors, with health and safety measures against the transmission of COVID-19 in place at each site.

 

Destinations of the 15 WAT tourism routes are Pichit, Phrae, Nan, Chiang Rai, Chainat, Saraburi, Phetchaburi, Buriram, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Phanom, Rayong, Prachin Buri, Phang Nga, Surat Thani, and Songkhla. They try hard with lots of new ideas and initiatives but dont execute the plans very well.

Makes me sad to see so many good ideas fall apart through lack of management.

They're all wearing those hi-so shields. No matter they've been condemned as being of as much use as a Thai on a motorbike, they're all the rage on the telly and other hi-so watering holes so that's good enough for them.

it's only thai, and older generation, which do once a year do pilgrimages, usually one day, doing some 5-10 temples.

Rarely any foreigners would concentrate on them, temple would be only one of many attractions on the way, and not far from the main route.

there may be only less than 100 temples in the country which are special to tourists.

They are rather not old, because those are ruined, dilapidated.

Most tourists, after doing several temples in bkk and chiang mai, don't want to see anymore of them.

 

local traditions are completely different matter, but again, not for the majority and not large part of holiday.

 

foreign tourists are coming for beaches, nature.

 

can't imagine pandemic and post-pandemic tourism based on travel - that's outright danger to everybody. Tourists should stay only in one place, travel within one province, no matter how long they are coming for

Worship is consumerism and the collection of wealth for many. The rest is show and hypocracy.

My local temple which is famous in Thailand for having the tallest stupa charges entry for foreigners.

As the guy stands in front of you at the gates with his hand out to be paid, I merely smile at him and say "keep your temple" turn and walk away.

"I came here to pray with my family sir, we come every week, and every week you won't let me pray without paying, so I can mot make merit for the lord buddah and therefore he can not help me to obtain the funds required, you see where I am going sir.  Enjoy your temple unto yourself".

Hell they would have made more money from merit giving had they just tried not to charge.
