When You Realise The Forums A Waste Of Time

Two points, although Libya is doing a fantastic job (better than his jokes!) why does he oversensationalise (?) some of his headlines?

And what was all that 'thieving Arab' sh1t about the other day when the guy who was doing the thieving hadn't even been caught and his nationality was unknown.

General Thoughts.

When a thread exceeds 30 pages, then there is something awry in most cases. In reality no one is going to page through and without some kind of 'previously on 24 style intro' the circularity of the thread becomes inevitable.

The drugs blacklist thread is an example of this, after a few pages the tennis match starts and there is little way forward. Also posters use this 'fact' to their advantage by rewriting their history relatively safe in the knowledge that it's unlikely someone is going to dig up post x on page 15.

IMHO it is better to add links to new news item generated thread where, and I accept it is a judgment call, the news item provides an opportunity for a new take or moves the focus of the discussion on or, heaven forfend, a reappraising of posters positions.

I also find it sad that it is so difficult to apply historic data to present events here, without it being either ignored or flamed, I guess that is a reflection of the audience, but for example, the southern troubles need to be seen in the light of historic events, the perception of them, and most relevantly the fact that elements of the recent {60/70 years} history has been airbrushed out of existence. But the main protagonists in this have settled down into propaganda and trench warfare as opposed to debate, leading to most now avoiding the threads further adding to the stagnation of the discussion.

Oh to be able to generate illumination without heat.

He's not trying to sell newspapers, he's supposed to be giving us news.

Libbys has a gift at sensationalizing headlines, complete with the appropriate topic icon. god bless him

and welcome back terry, :D

the fun and games seem to be finishing up... along with some of the more entertaining posters. :o

Ok, but how about some follow up. Trainwreck journalism gets tiring after a while.

Have you seen the latest one? Where in the article is it proved that the dude invented a story, for all we know it's a true story, why does he feel the need to add his opinion to the headline, just report the article, you can add your opinion afterwards!

I saw one a few months about about an Irishman who was accused but not found guilty of videotaping a girl he was having sex with.

The headline was along the lines of 'Irishman videotapes himself having sex with girl' not 'Irishman accused of videotaping himself having sex with a girl'.

Now if I was that Irishman and I read that on this fourm thaivisa would be dealing with a libel lawsuit right now.

Very shoddy bad quality reporting, and it might land TV in some trouble someday soon.

i think the reason why there is no follow up concerning the news articles is that as far as i know it is against the law to comment on or criticize a judge or his verdicts. And obviously if the verdicts were reported, you're going to get everyone screaming how the judge was bribed , or the person got too harsh a sentence etc. and that could lead to problems for Thaivisa.

He should follow Jai Dee's lead for posting news articles so that there is some semblance of continuity for how news is served across the site. Having one person posting all the news in a single forum does make it look like an "official" Thaivisa news post.

There's plenty of news reports on this site of cases that have already been judged.

Thankfully jamesiboys daily joke barrage seems to have abated because everything else kept getting pushed out of the way.

Anyone could post the news (even me with my limited computer skills) as all he does is copy the stories from 2 different sources, pattaya news online , forget the name of the other one, he's not even quick off the mark, other forums have the stories up hours or sometimes days before him. But i just presumed he was an old man and it was his hobby and Thaivisa was happy to let him continue, hence i've never bothered to jump in and post the news first for fear of rocking the boat.

In General topics the trolls have won, even if someone isn't a troll everyone screams 'Troll', that's an almost dead section.

it is not just the trolls, but the pathetic, inane one line comments that have no substance that have crashed this particular sub-forum.

Nail, head....

yet ppl must stick to their plan?

:o

See what I mean!

I've also noticed the decline in the Farang Pub... so come on, what are we all going to do about it, tell me what you'd like to see and what you wouldn't like to see, and lets try and get it back to what it was..

Also, it wouldn't hurt to start some decent topics in there........

totster :D

This is a good point but it will be lost at present with the the other threads running, having said that, the frivolous threads have a purpose, you can't be serious all the time, there is a need to escape.

However it does appear to have lost focus, perhaps certain threads should be closed after a certain time, to allow others to mature or even to grow.

I feel no one will post a serious thread because they are not aware that this is the forum for anything non-trite, and so gets left to the trivial.

Which is not always helped by any 'off the wall thread', being 'moved to the Pub', and so exacerbating a possible perceived problem.

Yet, from what I have observed, the same small cliques and groups keep popping up, time after time, mainly making inane comments, and often he..l bent on 'rubbishing' anything half way meaningful that is posted.

Exactly the reason I have stopped using general on a frequent basis.

The constant rubbishing, without any thought or substance of all thing Thai and female is beyond Neanderthal, 'give a, Thai girl an inch and they will take a mile', & 'if they step out of line, she is history', I actually read that in the Isaan forum, a normally respectful sub-forum, or some other pot less comment.

Do you think that us mods should be hitting on this kind of stuff harder?

Yes, the constant one-line attacks and longer diatribes, need to have some form of substance or people will be very tentative about giving an opinion and as such the good but not so confident posters will wither on the vine and the individual forums will stagnate and ultimately die or become totally regressive nonsense.

You can't hit it any harder because they will hit you harder. Most of the trolls on here have come from banned members last time there was massive crackdowns in the days of Dr PP.

Anyways, as much as I enjoyed this thread it went wildly off topic really. I wasn't really complaining about the state of the forum at the moment in the OP because I think it's doing pretty good.

What I was saying is that when you are on here daily it seems so important to check in and get involved and make a load of posts even on great threads, but when you have been away for a time it's so easy to look in and think '###### it, think I will do something more worthwhile with my time today'.

Probably my fault for writing a bad OP and only a few people really got the point, it's more about wondering why I am having another discussion about dowrys or whatever when I could be reading a good book, enjoying a film, or even surfing elsewhere on the net. It seems really noticeable to me when I've been away for a week or so but I always end up coming back since I'm on the net pretty much all the time.

The General forum, News forum, and Farang Pub forums IMO, have deteriorated a lot. However the niche forums are full of excellent info, and have gotten better over time. If you more or less ignore those three I think you wind up with a much more positive view of things.

I've noticed that somewhat ironically, the forum with some of the oldest threads still active is the news forum. I rarely post their anymore. Seems to be the same old "what Thaksin had done wrong" and "TRT targeted for dissolution" and others running in an endless loop.

General has its good moments but too many discussions turn into arguments. I generally give up on topics after a day or two. I figure if I can't get my point across after three attempts then I'm not explaining it properly. Nothing more boring than the same opinions flying back and forth ad nauseum.

The tech forum is great, there's such a wide variety of experience in there that I always learn something new.

The real estate and business forums are excellent, as is the Thai language forum.

The Farang Pub forum used to be about music, bars, entertainment, and other similar topics but it's degenerated into a bunch of silly "pick a number, change a letter", and similar post count building games. If I were sponsoring it I'd be pissed.

Family and children forum has come along very nicely, and the local forums are probably the best place to go for specific advice on a particular area. Most people just post their questions in General where they die a quick death instead though. Post in the appropriate local forum and you usually get a better answer.

I agree with you cdnvic, they have gone downhill the 3 you speak of. I used to get loads of good info on nights out etc, now its just become a three word game! The local forums such as the Chiang Mai forum has an abundance of people willing to help and gave me alot of info for my last break up there.

I do believe that some of the post counting games do drag people in, but I for one have cured my addiction and just rant at people now, apologies in advance! :o

Are you saying that you'd prefer to see new developments posted as new topics, in preference to additions to existing ones?

This is one of the shortcomings of the forum software.

Its a bit clumsy the way it is now, and a bit hard to follow (the headlines are more or less 'hidden') but clogging up the news section with every new development is not a solution.

Ideally the relevent topics should be able to be grouped together somehow, in an easy to read format. Perhaps a political subforum and each new major development gets its own thread, separating the topics up a bit more.

They're are a good community building tool and like you said they drag people in but they have taken over the farang pub section and it's lost it's real purpose. Ideally a seperate 'game' forum could be set up for those.

What's really needed is sponsors that don't just pay money to the site to get there banner up there but find sponsors that actively improve those sections as well. Of course that's hard to find and whoever pays comes first since this is a business.

But that then brings me back to the other topic I started about allowing URLs in signatures, you might get people who run Thailand nightlife websites adding threads here if they got a chance to have a bit of traffic back from Thaivisa. Unfortunately TV doesn't want to give that traffic away and they miss out on quality content and information because of it.

I am sorry BKK, if I have missed your point, from your point of view, but I am not exactly sure that I have.

Sometimes threads take on a life and ambition of their own and so evolve into something just as important as the original perspective.

I actually agree, that those who want some kind of feedback should be allowed, I am still in the zone of, if I can help I will, just to pass on some of the help I have received over time.

But I also think some Trolls should be shut down, even if they are going to open up the next day with an alternative Moniker, but the alternative is to have the insidious, snide remarks that keep the positive, good but not so confident posters in the shadows.

I personally was answering questions that evolved out of your original post.

However I probably agree with what you say, on the whole but not entirely.

Good luck

No worries Mossfin, just pointing it out. Good for the site to have feedback I think.

But you can't shut down trolls, they come back with a vengeance. Most of the trolls are members that were banned from here anyway.

Best advice is to ignore them. If members didn't scream troll all the time it might help. :o

I agree to a certain degree about Trolls, why people shout Troll at the earliest opportunity is beyond me.

I actually argued against the banning of a Troll in the visa forum because I knew he would materialize the next day in some other format, but at the end of the day they are destructive and peddle their own skewed point of view to the detriment of honest posters desperately wanting in-put on their particular problem.

On this occasion he had to go and I agreed, there is a limit, at least he had some knowledge.

I disagree with you however, zap them quickly particularly if they have nothing better to say but demolish valid and constructive comment, because the higher the post count the greater respect among the new guys who have no idea that they got that post count in, ' change a letter', 'What are you listening to now' and the jokes forum, where they are reading it out of a book.

Hey guy's don't take offence I have posted in all of these!!

I guess there is an argument that some of the troll topics generate the most page clicks/refreshes and therefore the most money for the website.

Just to clarify, although I might have been a little scathing earlier, I am a great fan of this forum as can easily be determined I guess, just get a little frustrated sometimes.

However, the question was, ' replying to when you realize the forums a waste of space'.

It evolved into many things, including the Farang Pub, so for the craic I put three varying topics to see what response I would get, I was quite enlightened by the said response in one, disappointed in another an fell about laughing in the third.

I was criticized for putting up a U.K politics topic and the response was, ' shouldn't I be on a UK web site, what has this got to do with Thailand'.

The fact that the said individual had just posted on the previous thread regarding, Harry and Iraq, bears a certain amount of questioning but the fact the, ' Song Title Game', had just taken a hit as well, is really quite ........!

:o

So the question remains, Replying to when', Ahh whatever

Good Luck

Hardly surprizing really, but I did it for the craic as stated above, just to wind things up a bit, instead of the infernal, ' change a letter', etc so I am not duly annoyed or perplexed, in the cold light of day, I actually agree.

Hacked off ?? It does seem that's what your intentions were. To wind up others (who have been playing away peacefully).. Then make your retreat and gloat to others of your victory..

Have a nice day. :bah:

You appear to have misunderstood my wording, the term, 'wind up the forum', was meant in good faith to actually put a different slant on the threads, not as you appear to have taken the words literally and to wind individuals up. That was not my intention in any sense, shape or form.

However, I do appear to have, 'wound you up a little', that was not my intention and in response perhaps my replies were not particularly helpful or constructive, so for that, I hold out an olive branch.

Having had correspondence with a MOD, I now acknowledge that perhaps and I say this in hindsight, they were probably not the direction that it should have gone.

Furthermore, I have stated earlier in this thread and again to the MOD who has corresponded, there appears to be little direction in the Pub, certainly no focus and hence the result in an endless spring of frivolous threads that go on ad nauseum, perhaps this is right and if so re-name it the crèche or kindergarten.

Again, I repeat as I have said earlier in the thread, I do not think there is anything wrong with having a little release, I also have posted in the majority of these threads, but in my opinion it had got out of hand.

As a further question, I have noticed Totsters response to O.C in Forum support where a particular rule appears to have been quoted, where can this be found, I have neither seen it in Forum rules or pinned in the Pub?

So how about it Austhaied, Truce.

Good Luck

I agree it needed a clean up.. But, if you don't like it, don't go there.. Truce.. :o

Hi guys,

As you have all noticed some of the games threads have been shut down. It's something I have been thinking about for a while now, and when some others mentioned it, it confirmed by thoughts on the matter also.

There are too many, and some were shut down... not all, so you can still have your play in there.

Personally what I would like to see is a return to what it used to be before all the games topics were moved from another forum (HKK) into the pub.

Pub and restaurant reviews, live music in bangkok discussions (or anywhere in Thailand really), relationships etc.. you get the idea.... and ideally only 10% of the topics being "game" topics..

As a further question, I have noticed Totsters response to O.C in Forum support where a particular rule appears to have been quoted, where can this be found, I have neither seen it in Forum rules or pinned in the Pub?

Not sure what rule you mean Moss.. if it's generally what was stated in the topic, it can be found here..
