Report Connectivity Challenges Loom for Vietnam's Long Thanh International Airport
Picture courtesy of VN Express As Vietnam prepares to unveil its largest airport, Long Thanh International Airport, concerns are mounting over limited connectivity, potentially undermining its operational success. This issue was the focal point of a recent seminar conducted by Tuoi Tre newspaper, examining the transportation links needed between the airport, located in Dong Nai Province, and the bustling hub of Ho Chi Minh City. Spanning 5,000 hectares and with an investment surpassing VND336 trillion (US$13.2 billion), Long Thanh International is slated to begin operations in 2026, with an initial capacity for 25 million passengers per year. Despite its promise, the infrastructure required to support seamless connectivity lags behind. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Quang Phu, Vice Rector of the University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City, highlighted the pressing need for synchronized infrastructure. With Ho Chi Minh City serving as the region's economic heart, efficient transport links to the airport are essential. At present, key routes like the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and National Highways 1 and 51 are already congested. Critical projects such as Ring Road 3, the Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway, and the Bien Hoa–Vung Tau Expressway are still underway, and the Ring Road 4 project has just been approved. To address these connectivity issues, Phu suggests adopting a multimodal approach. This includes integrating metro lines, bus rapid transit, high-speed rail, and waterways, drawing inspiration from international models like Incheon Airport in South Korea. He also proposes transit-oriented development (TOD) along these routes to optimize land use and enhance accessibility. "In the short term, expanding the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and integrating it with Ring Road 4 is crucial," Phu stated. "Investments in railways and utilizing river routes for airport access are also key." Nguyen Cao Cuong, Deputy General Director of Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), underscores the importance of connectivity for Long Thanh to function as a major transit hub. Travel between Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh currently takes between two to five hours, presenting a significant deterrent for passengers and airlines. Cuong insists that early investments in expressways, metro lines, and high-speed rail are vital for the airport's effective operation. The completion of the airport's main terminal is targeted for December, followed by test operations. Meanwhile, Huynh Tan Loc, Deputy Director of Dong Nai’s Department of Construction, recognizes Long Thanh's strategic significance for regional economic growth. Efforts to accelerate key projects like Ring Road 3 and the Bien Hoa–Vung Tau Expressway are ongoing, with aspirations to finish within the year. Additionally, extending the HCMC metro line to Long Thanh is under consideration, alongside TOD developments. However, existing travel routes primarily cater to cars, leaving motorbike infrastructure lacking. The proposed Cat Lai Bridge, crucial for motorbike transit from HCMC to Long Thanh, remains unimplemented despite ongoing local discussions. As these connectivity challenges persist, the success of Long Thanh International Airport hinges on comprehensive infrastructure solutions that ensure it meets its potential as both a destination and a transit hub, vital for Vietnam’s future economic landscape.
