Inmates nationwide expected to be inoculated in June

Thailand’s department of corrections is planning to inoculate all inmates nationwide, beginning with people at high-risk, such as those over 60, those with a high BMI and those with congenital diseases. The campaign is expected to begin in June, after the new lot of vaccines arrive.

A number of the correction department officials, who have to be in contact with inmates, such as to take them to and from court, have already been vaccinated.

The deputy director-general at the department of corrections, Weerakit Harnpripan, said that the inoculation campaign is a part of the plan which the department’s director-general proposed to the justice minister. The proposal also includes the conducting of rapid COVID-19 tests, which can produce results within 20 minutes, as soon as a new prisoner leaves the court, but before entering the system.

Congestion, poor ventilation among causes of COVID-19 transmission in factories

Congestion, poor ventilation and sharing of the same drinking vessels have been blamed as the main causes of the spread of COVID-19 in five factories, with more than 500 workers each, in Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi provinces, said Department of Health Director-General Dr. Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai today (Friday).

He disclosed that about 250 infections have, so far, been found in the factories, which were also found to have poor air circulation and were overcrowded, with more than one person per 4 square metres.

The workers were not properly screened for COVID-19 infection before entering the workplace, and prefer to eat together, socialise and share the same glasses for drinking water, said Dr. Suwanchai said.

Using the same glasses  or those  metal mugs  is so common  !  I remember seeing water containers in a hospital  a couple of years ago with a metal mug  on top of it !

Hygiene   the new normal !

So many have to be taught the new normal in many countries !  Sharing can be detrimental to your health !

Family of Covid victim sues Prayut, CCSA for THB4.5m

The mother of Kulsub Watthanaphol, a well-known figure in Thailand’s e-sport industry, filed a case at Administrative Court on Friday to demand THB4.53 million in compensation for the death of her son.

Lulsub died on April 23 during the ongoing third wave of the epidemic, becoming Thailand’s 137th Covid-19 fatality.

Kulsub’s brother, Kulchet, appeared in court as his mother’s proxy and demanded the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the prime minister, his secretary and the PM’s Office pay compensation of THB4.53 million for “negligence” in treating Kulsub, who contracted Covid-19 from an infection cluster in Bangkok.

Maybe the first of many more to come. Malfeasance, negligence and trickery to boot.

Thailand today is opening the a 1,200 bed field hospital for COVID patients at Challenger Hall, Impact Muang Thong Thani, in Nonthaburi province in a bid to ease the mounting pressure of COVID cases on traditional hospitals in the Bangkok region.

The facility will be equipped with portable x-ray units and ventilators, and officials say it is capable of being expanded to up to 5,000 total beds if needed. The field hospital is being opened in what normally is one of the country's largest convention hall/exhibit space arenas.

The field hospital has been set up with extensive remote monitoring of COVID patients, in order to minimize the risk of spreading the virus to health care workers and care for a large population of patients.

The Department of Corrections says 506 inmates and 2 wardens at Klong Prem Central Prison tested positive for COVID-19. The prison is located within the same perimeter as the Bangkok Remand Prison, where a cluster of infections came to light earlier this week.

"According to Foreign Ministry spokesman, the Royal Thai Embassy in India has arranged two more flights to help repatriate Thais from India this month because COVID-19 infections in India are increasing.

A flight on Saturday (May 15) would bring 150 Thai citizens back home. Another one is planned for May 22. Meanwhile, Thailand has suspended issuing a Certificate of Entry (COE) and visas for people travelling from India who had been in that country since May 1.

Furthermore, Anucha Burapachaisri, the government spokesman, said that this measure does not apply to Thais who have permanent residency in Thailand and diplomats and their families who come to work here. Although these people are allowed to enter, they would still need to be quarantined for 14 days."

Yes, I guess so. Or stay inside.

Maybe a couple of good covid tests and if negative,  release.

Have a mate with stepdaughter in for 2yrs as an accomplice to her, unmarried partner, who allegedly sold secondhand motorcycle parts.

He got 7 yrs and she got 2yrs,about a year ago.

She wouldn't know anything about motorcycles except how to ride one.

No consideration for the 10 year old boy left with no mum and dad.

Court didn't care it seems..

Thai justice at its best!

"The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation has designated June 14 for the opening of the next semester for universities.

Ministry spokesperson, Duangrit Benjathikul Chairungruang, said lessons are to be conducted online and on-site, depending on the COVID-19 situation in the various locations where universities are located.

He said a higher education commission is expected to set online education standards to maintain a consistent education quality across the board. Vaccination is, however, a key factor in expediting on-site education. If teachers and students are vaccinated before the next semester, the education sector and society as a whole will be safe.

Mr. Duangrit added that students need to be vaccinated, as they have many social activities and gatherings.

Maybe we could make the unvaccinated wear coloured stars, maybe have a number tattooed on their wrists .... also maybe put them on trains to live in camps in the countryside. ...... it's been done before.
It wasn't acceptable then .... it shouldn't be now

Because none of those health issues can wreak disaster the way a pandemic does.

Maybe not over a short period, the longer term might prove different.

With people getting the vaccine now, will they still be tested or ignored as candidates for testing? Thre just seems to be a lot of people who were vaccinated that end up still being infected. I can imagine some hospital staff who've gotten the vaccinations actually being carriers despite what they think.

Bill Maher was vaccinated and now he's tested positive "Bill tested positive during weekly staff PCR testing for COVID. He is fully vaccinated and as a result is asymptomatic and feels fine."

Will Thailand bother to retest those who have been vaccinated?

Thailand gets to lead off a TIME article on spreading COVID infections in SE Asia...

Southeast Asia Kept COVID-19 Under Control For Most of the Pandemic.

Now It's Battling Worrying New Surges

At Thammasat University Hospital, about 20 miles north of Bangkok, doctors are scrambling to treat COVID-19 patients streaming in. Nearby, extra beds have been crammed in to a student dormitory block, turning it into a field hospital that can accommodate an additional 470 patients.

“We don’t have enough beds, we don’t have enough ventilators,” Anucha Apisarnthanarak, the chief of the infectious diseases division at the hospital, tells TIME. “This is only my hospital, but of course there are a lot more hospitals experiencing the same problem.”

In Jan. 2020, Thailand became the first country outside of China to confirm a case of the disease that became known as COVID-19—but it successfully fought off the pandemic for most of the year, recording less than 5,000 cases in a population of 70 million by mid-December. Now the total has skyrocketed 18-fold to more than 90,000 cases as this onetime COVID success story battles a worrying new surge.

Must still be rationing the Testing Kits to 20K a Day, as this 2000 per Day Infection rate is then 10% of those tested.

Seems about right to me

Except for testing outside of Bangkok, you are right.

Care to explain

Bangkok tests some 2000 to 3000 people on most days.

Chonburi tests about 1000 a day now.

Other provinces test, but don’t post the numbers, it comes in bits and pieces.

Other posters have stated that about 15,000 people are tested every day.
