I have often wondered why disinfectant is so expensive in Thailand?

I would have thought in these pandemic times, the government would ensure disinfectant is affordable.

What are the alternatives Thais use?

Posted

You are probably referring to Dettol and similar.

If you enter "disinfectant" into Lazada you will see a whole range of much cheaper alternatives.

Halter bleach is about 70-80 baht for 2.5 litres and kills everything, except Covid, i.e. unless you believe Donald.

I have noticed that it appears to have been watered down of late ?

Personally I find bleach efficient but not good on the odour, disinfectant has more variety and not so overpowering and lingering.

We like the smell of disinfectant, but not at the price they want, Dettol is a good brand we used to use in the home country, mostly when on special we would stock up, but here, it's a joke.

When bleaching, we use gloves and make sure windows and doors are open and fans are on, the overpowering and lingering smells don't last more than a minute, then again, we have big rooms and high ceilings which might be why we don't notice it as much ?

Dettol may be expensive but used as directed it goes a long way.

Can also rub down surfaces with Ethyl alcohol  70% (clear blue, available from 7/11 now )

Do not drink 555

I would have thought that might be a fire risk?

Disinfectant is quite a general term as you can see from the thread.

What kind of disinfectant is considered expensive and for what purpose?

THE number one disinfectant in the country is alcohol (jelly) for the hands.

Can't count how many liters we have of that stuff.

Got some freebies on the last flights (months ago).

I don't consider this stuff expensive.

I have a little spray bottle on the desk outside.

As we lack any Corona virus here I use if after searching the dogs skin ????

Also a nice shower for the face (eyes closed).

Gives a nice cool breeze.

Basically aftershave without the scent.

I won't use Vixol instead ????

Interesting... "All you've got is this moment", quoted from the bottom of your post and you choose to throw an inaccurate jab at the former president.

Dear Mods, please forgive me. I know it's an off topic post.

So for me the topic reads:

Why is Dettol so expensive here?

Are there cheaper alternatives?

At the moment I can only speculate about the first question: you pay for the name, big advertising/marketing.

About the second question: couldn't pull a rabbit out of the hat with a quick search.

Will have an eye on at the next shopping tour.

Generally many drugstore prices here look expensive.

No working competition, consumer protection?

The CDC released new guideline based on research indicating that the chances of contracting the virus from surfaces is about 1 in 10,000.  That can be easily source online.

But the canard that The Plague can be passed via surfaces will probably never die even in the face of scientific studies.  A large segment of the population are incapable of loosening their grip on fear.  So for the foreseeable future stores like Makro will demand you douse yourself with hand sanitizer prior to entering the store, and the cashiers will continue to wear latex glove and receive/dispense money on a platter.
"Trust The Science!"
Well, only if the science is promoting fear.  Otherwise ignore it.

Bleach. Cheap. Perfect.

I find the smell mildly comforting. It smells like clean.

Detol smells like those old no-tell motels you drive up and pull the curtains closed...a friend told me.

Exactly.  I pair the smell of Detro (Pinesol in the West) with very cheap lodging.  Place where you would sleep for a few hours when making a cross-country haul.
I prefer the clean smell of beach.  Some of the fancy bleach even are scented but I prefer regular, old bleach.

Tesco & Aro sell a similar disinfectant to Dettol. about 40% cheaper at times. Another good desinfectant is Spa Clean but I wait till Tesco has it on sale 50% off, 100b 1L

Yes a little off the topic, but I do believe Donald did say that, regardless, I liked him for the record and do believe he was trying to clean out the swamp, but was merely quoting what he said about bleach, please correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct in stating the at the bottom of my post it does say, "All you've got is this moment", make of that what you will ????
