BANGKOK (NNT) - The Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) has urged returning Thai nationals in Malaysia to follow the required protocol, stressing penalties apply to those sneaking into the country via natural entry points.

The SBPAC has sent a message to Thai nationals in Malaysia wishing to return to Thailand to follow the required protocol for health and safety, in order to prevent possible cases being imported across border, as the situation in Malaysia worsens.

The SBPAC’s Assistant Secretary General Teerapong Petcharat has warned returning Thai nationals not to sneak over the Thailand-Malaysia border, along which security measures have been tightened to prevent illegal entry.

Anyone, including Thai nationals, found attempting an illegal crossing will face punishments according to law.

With daily new cases in Malaysia averaging more than 7,000 over the past seven days, a total nationwide lockdown has been implemented until 14 June. The SBPAC anticipates the demand by Thai nationals to return will increase.

The center has asked people in Thailand to get in touch with any family members who are in Malaysia at the moment, telling them to contact the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the Royal Thai Consulate General in Kota Bharu, or the Royal Thai Consulate General in Penang should they require assistance.

All Thai nationals in Malaysia must schedule their return and obtain the necessary documents from the Thai embassy, in order to be accepted at the border crossing, regardless of their immigration status. Undocumented and overstayed Thai nationals in Malaysia are allowed to register for their return, but must appear before an official in person for identification, and pay a fine to the Malaysian authorities.

All Thai returnees are subject to health measures after their arrival, including a mandatory period of quarantine. Entries via Thailand-Malaysia land border posts are only permitted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Internal Security Operations Command 4 (Forward Command) has mobilized more personnel to monitor potential passageways along the 647-kilometer Thailand-Malaysia border in order to block illegal entries.

The 4th Army Area has asked villagers on the Thailand-Malaysia border in Waeng, Su-ngai Kolok, and Tak Bai districts in Narathiwat, to help prevent illegal entry, by taking their boats out of the Golok river separating Thailand and Malaysia, and keeping them on land with their engines removed, in order to prevent unauthorized crossings.
