They are fully uniformed with tourist police stickers on the front of there BIG motorbikes and they even have a red light on the back.

Please someone tell me it was the filming of the latest Police Academy movie!!!! :o

So you think it is a good idea to send untrained unqualified wannabees onto the streets I am sure they will be the scourge of the criminal classes of Samui! :D

I think you dont know what you are talking about.

some of them have been on police duties before. some of them with militery background. all of them are residents in Samui and they all share the idea that they can actually do something to make Samui more tourist friendly.

while most farrnags at the end of the day pop down for a beer. theses guys dedicate time and effort to walk and drive around in the tourist areas and help out tourist that got into trouble, or help the locals avoid problems with tourists that think that Samui is lawless.

I respect them for this and i am sorry you dont see it that way.

one more thing..

All the "old Time farrangs" that have been on the island for a long time (you know.. I have been here since before the airport, and those were the days...) have good contacts to sort out problems..(you know... I know the village pooyai or i am very close with this or that and they are a well conected family)

unfortunatly those coming for a holiday dont have those "contacts" and when something goes wrong and they get into trouble the police volenteers are there to help and assist.

I realy can not understand the negetivity in some of the replies. alot of the threads are about hoe everything is wrong and how things need to improve. when some one is actually doing something and dedeicating time to do it they become a ridicule.

OK, I'll bite; what exactly do these few do? I have seen them on their bikes, with their what appears to be security guard uniforms on, but never have I seen them on foot in Lamai.

And after you detail what they do, please post whether or not they have any legal basis for whatever it is, if anything, they do.

Thanks

It must make the local "real" cops feel wonderful to see a farang "cop" on his big 1200 CC motorcycle while the poor cop can only afford a 110CC scoot.

I really wonder about the real underlying motives of these farang tourist "cops".

I can't see much use in them myself.

Unless they are offering island tours on the back of the bikes or something? :o:-)

Would it not be better if the real, trained cops learn a little more English?

Like, if these farangs are so devoted to lawn order, why don't they dedicate their time to offer free English/German/Whatever language and culture lessons to the real cops?

Or donate a big bike to Nathon police station so they can go play boy racers as well.

Here..here. Well written.

Also, the other day I saw a white car with the words "Tourist Police" on it. A Thai was driving it. I don't think Tourist Police are only farangs.

They open themselves to ridicule driving around on large BMW motorbikes Looking like a pair of ****heads and whether they actually improve anything is a matter of opinion. Are they fluent in Thai if not what is the point?

Chaweng has a dreadful parking problem maybe you could volunteer to be the first volunteer farang traffic warden :o

They are not doing any harm, thus let them be what they wanna be. If they can help a tourist here and there, why not, it's only good for the island. I believe they have them in Pattaya as well.....

For me they are as a whole harmless, one of them seems to have let it go to his head and wears as much weaponary etc as he is allowed around his waist to look good. he also has the big bike and police helmet last time i saw him it was only a Phantom with lots of cop type extras. who is he going to use his night stick and handcuffs on, some tourist who lost there bag certainly not a thai. looking at the profile poster on high divers post only one speaks thai. i saw the one who has taken things to seriously questioning bar girls in soi reggae a few weeks ago about the stabbing of a tourist. surley that is a job for the real cops. i have spoken to this particular cop a few times and he tells me he feels he should be allowed to carry a real weapon as he is police. he also went into a few bars in Bohpud and ask for contributions towards the cost of tourist police. he was promptly told where to get off.

get rid of the bad apple and reduce the profile a little bit would be my advice but things will go on the same until one of them gets in way above his head and ends up dead. for me it is only a matter of time and i will not be shedding any tears, on this island you have to keep a low profile.

just my humble opinion

wannabee rent a cops are a poor substitute for the real deal

Articles of equipment

Self-Defense and Self-Protection

For self-protection the following equipment is permitted (however not prescribed)

The equipment should be carried appropriately at a Combat-Belt.

Pepper spray

Electrical Taser

Handcuffs

Telescope Baton

Flashlight

the above from highdivers link ,

there are lots more effective ways of giving some service to the community ,

none that appeal to wannabee cops though .............................

as it seems that most of our members have no ide what they are talking bout regarding this issue.

please go to the site:

http://www.samuitouristpolice.com/volunteers.htm

i for one salute those who give time and effort for something ellse then making more money.

I know many local businessman who give up alot of time and money to good causes i.e. the Rotary Club yet they do not see the need to go and play PC Plod in Chaweng.

As for your military background arguement I fail to see how that experience is relevant, in the army you are trained to kill foreigners on our behalf from time to time how is that going to stand them in good stead policing Chaweng that is the last thing we need.

Lets hope they are more successful keeping the peace in downtown Chaweng on a Saturday night then downtown Baghdad.

Yesterday i parked my car on chaweng beach road beside the yellow/white markings, which i understand are for the loading/unloading of vehicles, which i was in the process of doing, you should of seen the look one of these coppers gave me,i was really scared!!!on the otherside of the road was about 4 taxi's parked on the red/white curbs, which i understand is NO PARKING.he smiled to them, sawat di krup,he said.I think you might see were i am coming from.

So? They have a Web site (check out the "Guest Book" at: http://www.samuitouristpolice.com/guest/guestbook.html). I still see nothing that says they have any legal authority to do anything other than arbitrate disputes.

I can't imagine a similar case, say in Hawaii, where the US police allowed volunteers from Thailand to carry stun guns and dress like security guards to "help protect and serve" tourists -- with virtually none of them speaking English.

I fully agree that serving the interests of those on Samui who are foreigners would be best achieved by bettering the real police force.

Does anyone have any experience with them other than being scowled at? I have seen one or two showboat around on their overkill bikes, but nothing more.

Do they have the power to arrest? To detain? To use force (and if so, under what circumstances?)? Do they have walkie-talkies to the "real" police? How can they call in back up if they can't speak Thai?

The list of questions about this goes on and on. And please, for the people who say, "Oh how sweet, nice of them to offer to help," I'd say that this is more of a red herring than a true gift.

Simple, get one of them to hassle you & see how much credence they carry. In a court of law,who do you think will win? Do they actually think they do a police check on these people? I know I had to have one for retirement visa,These people are much younger then me. So what BACKGROUND checks have they had?

I have done a lot of volunteer work in my life. From experience, you can shoot me down But.........

Helping old people maybe, a bit of traffic control & so on OK,But this............... The mind boggles.

I can tell you one thing about their website - they don't take care of it.

Check out these lines from the very top of their guestbook - they really should try to maintain their website better than the management job they are doing on their own image ;-)
