Phuket marks 14 COVID infections in past week, vaccinations hit 80% They're playing games with the way they're reporting their vaccination stats, as the article you linked to explains: "The Phuket office of the Public Relations Department (PR Phuket) has reported that as of yesterday (June 28) 80% of the target 466,587 people in Phuket to be vaccinated have received at least one vaccination injection. The report for yesterday marked that 374,631 had received one vaccination injection and that 298,320 people in Phuket had received two vaccination injections (64% of the 466,587 target). The target of 466,587 people in Phuket to be vaccinated has long been reported by officials as 70% of the island’s full population, which must be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity, and has been marked as a critical requirement for reopening the island to receiving foreign tourists on July 1, though no officials have been emphasising that point in the past few days." A Ministry of Public Health report in TH that I saw a few days ago said that as of June 24th, about 50% (272,999) of Phuket's population had been fully vaccinated, and 64% (349,564) had received just one shot. Presumably, the real numbers have gone up some in the ensuing few days. But they're nowhere near having 70% of the provinces population FULLY vaccinated, meaning two shots. Seems a big number for moderately to seriously ill people. Does it include people released from field hospitals? in which case it doesn’t have such a big impact on the number of beds needed for moderately to seriously ill patients. But I don’t know what’s included in that 2,793 number either.

First invention and studies on mRNA vaccines are from Vical, a US biotech start up. Robert Malone's name is on several early papers. 2. Much of the patented technology was developed by Prof Drew Weissman and a Hungarian biochemist Katalin Karikó who started working together on a vaccine at Penn State in the US. Their work is patented and licensed to Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna. 3. Pfizer is an American company founded by a German run by a Turk. BioNTech (A Turkish woman and German) developed the vaccine now sold by Pfizer using Weissman's and Karikó's patents. 4. Stanford and Harvard stem cell biologist Derrick Rossi (a Canadian of Maltese decent) recognized the importance of Weissman's and Karikó's work and founded Moderna in 2010. All the mRNA vaccines license Canadian technology for the little lipid 'fat' balls that deliver mRNA into your cells. Oh, and Thailand. Drew Weissman is now working with Chulalongkorn on a new mRNA vaccine. I suspect Drew is interested in trying out some new ideas. Bkk Brian
What dangers come with Beta, Bangkok’s latest COVID variant? First detected in South Africa late last year, the Beta variant – also known as B1.351 – blunts the efficacy of most COVID-19 vaccines. In clinical trials, two doses of AstraZeneca vaccine proved to be only 10.4 per cent effective in preventing mild to moderate B1.351 infections. https://www.thaipbsworld.com/what-dangers-come-with-beta-bangkoks-latest-covid-variant/ Edited June 29, 2021 by Bkk Brian

So that's the figure the central government at least is using as their basis for vaccination rate reporting... I think I read that figure is taken from the last census. During normal times it causes some angst with the Phuket authorities because they always claim that the actual population of the island is far more due to seasonal workers and workers who are here full time but remain registered in their home towns. Like my wife for instance. Phukets argument during normal times was that the island should be allocated a bigger amount of money from the central budget because the population was more than the official numbers showed. One year they even had a “registration drive” trying to persuade people to change the registration in their books, to Phuket. There was a mobile unit that drove around the island. of course times change. Now the census figure is just fine. ???? to be fair, a lot of people have gone back to their provinces, but they are still a lot of migrant workers and Thai’s who are here full time but not registered here.

You can quibble that free beds are occupied immediately, but your post implies that 4,000 newly infected people are all without beds. You forget about those that have been waiting at home to be taken to a hospital by ambulance as there were no beds available, so the same scenario will play out over and over again as it appears the hospitals are at or near capacity. Of course he cannot. In truth, the large majority of COVID cases being "cleared" every day are those that are asymptomatic or minor symptoms being released from field hospital facilities after serving their required quarantine time. That's doing little to nothing to help the root issue of regular hospital bed utilization and specifically those beds suited for COVID patients, including those requiring ICU care, where the current facilities are already pretty well maxed out. And once COVID cases get into the critical care realm, they're likely be to in those hospital beds/facilities for an extended period of time, until they either recover or end up dying. And meanwhile, as things stand now, increasing numbers of new cases are pouring in each and every day, a portion of which are going to end up requiring real hospitalization. It's a bad situation as things are heading right now. 1
