Hopefully, there is a low risk of severe haze expected this year originating from forest fires coming over from Indonesia this year, according to a local think-tank.

The report by the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) released recently said this was due to a confluence of factors.

These include improved land management policies by the Indonesian government, projected weather conditions.

Also due to the growing recognition among the authorities there that the carbon-rich peatlands and forests in the country could be a source of carbon credits.

This is good news not only for Singapore but also for other Asian countries including Thailand and Malaysia. The severe haze in the past has been especially hard on asthma sufferers.
