Pattaya: Immigration go after US man who refused to wear mask at Taco Bell - he's fined and repentant

Thailand's immigration bureau in the shape of chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang decided to take action after a video at the soft opening of Taco Bell in Pattaya showed a man of color arguing with a white man over wearing a mask.

It was felt that the IB should act in the case as the issue of wearing a mask is very serious at this stage of the pandemic with the potential for a 20,000 baht fine, reported Naew Na.

It was further felt that an example should be made especially as the man, an American national, had allegedly threatened violence in the store with staffers prepared to call the police after refusing him service.

The IB with the Chonburi provincial police went to Taco Bell where the incident occurred earlier this month and then to a condo on Pratumnak Hill where the man was residing.

They arrested him outside and he admitted that he was the person in the video.

He was named as Cxarence, 33, from the US, according to a board at IB HQ.

He was taken to Muang Pattaya police station and charged with unhiegenic activity potentially spreading a dangerous infection, essentially not wearing a mask in public.

Naew Na did not say how much he was fined - a first offence is generally considered to be 6,000 baht with the fine rising to 20,000 for a third offence notes ASEAN NOW.

The media further reported that the American accepted what he did was wrong and that he intended to be the "eyes and ears" of society in future in promoting the wearing of masks.

The case was reported at the IB's press conference at Suan Phlu, Bangkok yesterday with a large vinyl board erected that referred to the US man's skin color saying that he had tried to pick a fight.

What a total waste of time, if he was Thai nothing would have been done. Around here a very small percentage of people are wearing masks, nothing is done about it. Just another farang bashin

A tool and his money are soon parted, and I await the people who will arrive and say it was race based in arresting him and not because he was an insolent sob.

Just another farang bashing episode, having said that the man is as fool for not wearing a mask.

With todays numbers of

14,260 cases and 119 deaths one would hope mask wearing and personal safety along with any bias would be set aside and people would do the right thing to help us out of a potential 3 month lockdown as has been recommended.

Most of these places now have employees who sit outside the shop. I understand not being allowed to go into a private business while violating their policy. I think he has a point otherwise. Those outside employees could take his order and give it to him outside. Seems we should encourage people to stay outside if we truly want to follow the science. Outside/outdoor infections have been shown to be much less prevalent.

If only the government would divert a portion of the enormous “police vinyl board” budget into buying vaccines….

Very good. I didn't add up the numbers reported every day from the Central Mall in Pattaya. But very many employees had Covid there recently. First the mall was closed for desinfection and then some shops.

Such idiots not caring about regulations can put the health of others at risk and can cause a huge financial damage. PLEASE punish them and let others know about it that they perhaps learn something.

Yes, it's always about us farangs.  Remember that vid where the Thai national got into an altercation about refusing to wear a mask and it was posted on social media and the police did nothing about it?...Neither do I.

They are all buying their cheap Charlie breakfast at the cheap Charlie restaurants and then eat it hidden at home. Thank you government that we don't have to watch them anymore. ????????

How is enforcing the law “a total waste of time”?

So you would generously let someone steal your mobile phone without demanding legal action because others have done it before and got away with it?

I don’t know where “Around here” is but I don’t see many people not wearing a mask.

Just another farang bashing episode,

Work on your self esteem or go back home. You’re a white man; you’re the most privileged species in this world. This whining “us poor farangs are bashed all the time” is pathetic.

Lies. No one came on and said it was about race; others than the racists here who abused him for being black.

But not one post suggesting that he was being discriminated against during the incident. The ONLY comments about his race were from the dirty racists here.

yes and when i suggested the video be shown to Thai police so he would be arrested the response here was "As if".

In your dreams and in your view, please go back and look at the OP again and slowly read the posts again as there is one specific poster who kept up saying the posts which some of us made were racist, so try again.  Epic
