If you are trying to decide if learning the tone rules is indispensable for you consider this. Imagine you don't know the pronunciation of an English word, let's say "entrepreneurial". (I know, everyone can say it, it's just an example). So you go to a dictionary website and see this: What do you do? Do you look at the phonetic spelling or click on the little speaker? The Thai tone rules are very complex I think most people are better off clicking to hear an audio file and learn from that.
