BANGKOK (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hopes to add 500,000 Russian visitors to its 1 million international tourists this year, after the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) allowed tourists inoculated with the Sputnik V vaccine to visit “sandbox” destinations in the country.

 

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said Russia was one of the country’s tourism sources with 1.4 million visitors per year prior to the pandemic. An influx of Russian tourists to Greece and Turkey during the pandemic proves that there’s demand in this market.

 

He said the agency previously forecast of 1.2 million international tourists this year but, due to a resurgence of COVID-19 everywhere, that number may drop to 1 million.

 

According to the TAT, the Russians are expected to start visiting “sandbox” areas by October at the earliest, as charter flights will need one month to prepare operations and group bookings. The TAT will also contact other airlines to arrange scheduled flights to Phuket, as 50% of Russians, mostly individual travelers, book their own tickets.

I think they will be back to 40 million tourists at the end of 2022. Wonder if my phone will call soon, with an offer to work as consultant for TAT. ????

Wait isn't there another OP where they downgraded the amount of tourists for the year to only be 150k.  Where are the Million going to come from, then add in another 500K, So basically they are expecting 1 million plus tourists to arrive in the next 4 months and 12 days.  Can you believe this ridiculous embellishment.  What kind of hallucinatory medications are these guys on.....

So people used to come to Thailand with the prospect that would have a blah time but at least it was cheap? The scenery, the beaches, the food, the art, the architecture were all irrelevant?

Scenery? Mediterranian is way nicer to me. Food? The one is too spicy for most of farang visitors... Well, can try, but look how many foreign-owned restairants serve European food - this is becasue of the demand from tourits who dont want to eat Thai food every day. Art?? What do You call art, this visuial garbage on the streets, covered by chaotic advertisements and ugly shop signs? Is there anyone who can walk and enjoy street architecture in Thailand?

I think a legitimate concern would be fake vaccination certificates. Corruption in Russia is rampant and the population very averse to vaccination.

For a LOT of tourists to Thailand the scenery, beaches, food, art architecture, temples, nature reserves, reefs, tiger zoos you name it they are all irrelevant.

What does a lot mean? Can you attach a percentage to that? I think there were 40 million tourists per year coming to Thailand before the advent of Covid.
