Five hundred dogs are getting their own Thai ID cards to mark national Dog Day in Thailand yesterday.

Animal celebrity Thongbai Sertsorn was in Nonthaburi yesterday handing out the first of the cards among people at River Home in Pak Kret who had registered paying 100 baht a time, reported Daily News.

The cards are very similar to Thai ID cards for people and are called "Dog National ID Card" in English.

One woman said she was very proud that her mutt would take her surname.

Her pet was named on the card as Dek Ying (female child) Chaokuai SaeHeng.

Date of Birth: 10th December 2018.

Religion: Buddhist.

Thongbai, a former sergeant major in the army, said it was a first in the world for Thailand.

O.M.B., notes ASEAN NOW.

The ID card is only the first step. Next they'll get their drivers license.

  • Third and fourth generation, Thailand born Hill-Tribe kids denied basic education because of lack of ID card: "0" Dogs: "1".

  • Once again proving that expats are indeed viewed as lower than animals here.

Passport photoes of our late, beloved dogs with some Bang Kaeo blood. They don't stay in a passport, but in our hearts - for ever !

I hear Thai Government are thinking about replacing the Pink IDs with the Dog National ID Card for the Farang here...

Joking, joking. Not going to happen. Chip is too expensive...

As a foreigner is it very difficult if you are not married to get a pink card..... Living 16 years in the same city, paid tax, have social security insurance, a valid extended visa for the same time but I only can get a pink card if I copy my passport , legalize it at the Embassy and than translate into Thai with legalisation again....Ok if it is that difficult than no card

As daft as it may seem...

Perhaps a step in the right direction IF the objective is to have dogs licensed so that owners are responsible for them when they bite.

Unfortunately, this is more likely to be just a juvenile bit of fun thought up by someone in position of ID issuing power...

Yeah, its nice, its cute...  but really...

Actually some of them posses better road sense than their 2-legged counterparts.

Think I'll apply for a yellow tabien baan for my dogs kennel.

Not to mention those (real people) refugees up in the mountains and at special camps at the borders who have actually lived in Thai territory for years and years and cannot get an official Thai ID.

How about a National Refugee Day for them?

Anyone wonders why I don't want a Thai Id-Card?

They will probably get their vaccine before us  as well

Does this come with the right to vote? Would be the first time I would understand, why they would vote for bones, treats and biscuits - their owners go for money, money and money!

So no competition there! Lets see the next election's outcome .........
