Alcohol

Also...    There are 3 facts to this ‘drink driving’ issue

a) The White - No alcohol with driving

b) The Grey - A few beers are ok to drive

c) The Black - Getting hammered and driving

Most people are in the grey area

- Its ok to have a couple of beers and drive a few KMS home.

- Its not ok to have a 5 beers and drive 400km at highways speeds.

- Its not ok to have 8 beers and drive 1km home (but some do - ayholes)

- Its not ok to have 8 beers and ride (motorcycle) 1km home on quiet roads (unless riding like a lunatic, the worst they will do is hurt themselves).

The grey area is quite varied depending on where you are, how much you have been drinking, what you are riding or driving etc...

Because transport is a necessity, whereas drinking and then driving yourself isn’t.....

That said: given some of the comments regarding drink driving we may also need to consider an IQ test before being given permission to take to the roads.

Private cars are not a necessity, despite what their owners pretend.
If we got rid of them, traffic would be improved immensely.  But no, people insist that forming a traffic jam is an essential necessity of modern life.

Part of what you say is true but no government in any country in the world could have a public transport system that catered for every person in every location at every hour that would be needed. example what are you going to supply to pick up workers that finish work at 02:30 and there are 50 of them that live in all different directions and distances. Private transport is a necessity.

Because a bar is designed for people moving around and mingling, social interaction which is lubricated with alcohol.

Whereas a restaurant involves people sitting down and eating.

There is an obvious difference between the two, an obviously difference in the mindset of visiting one compared to the other.

When the Bars opened in the U.K. it was waitress service only, no standing at the Bar and a limit of people allowed at a table, 6 I think, some Bars you could order your drinks via an app on your phone.
There is no reason why that system could not be implemented here in Thailand.

In a country famous for following regulations....

I actually agree... Something like this could be put in place... the issue is that the regulations will not be enforced because the police are lazy, hence a total blanket ban...

TBH it was never really enforced in the U.K., there isn’t enough Police to enforce it albeit I do believe some local Council Officers were checking, I never read about any businesses being prosecuted.

Bet they did not see you drinking beer as that would set you back for a nice amount.

If its below the 0.05% then sure no problem for me. I find it a fine line i would never use any drug alcohol included when operating a vehicle. I lost someone who also thought it was ok to drink and drive, so im not exactly happy with people who drink and drive.

Now if you stay under the legal limit then your legal and i should refrain from calling you that. Still its not about blind rotten drunk or not its about legal limits.

Anyway legally your not allowed to drink and drive in Thailand, but i find being over the limit the problem.

So i apologize about calling you douchebag, though i really wonder about those that drink and drive how often they really stop at their 2 beers ect.

All good mate,

FWIW I don't stop at two.

I'll have a couple more  during my evening activities (walk dog/laps in pool/cook dinner etc etc) before retiring to bed to watch a movie.

Thus: we are not discussing that ‘Bars and Nightclubs’ should be open to serve beer and wine etc... but that Restaurants where people can already visit and eat should not be prevented from allowing people to have beer with their dinner.

But as has already been explained.. The Thai police are utterly incapable of differentiating and or enforcing on that distinction.

The only thing they have is allowed / not allowed.. Hence..

But those few more i could not care about less, whatever people want to do is their choice. I just don't think its a good idea in traffic. That is why there are legal limits. You said you stayed under it. Even though your not allowed to do so legally because of the law I don't care much about that rule. Only the legal limit matters for me. (and yes can debate about people who can still drive ok but that is a pointless discussion)

Yeah have heard it is illegal to have an open container in the car.

Amusing story, approx 18 months ago instead of going straight home I had to stop at a friends workshop, on route had to stop at traffic lights, was sitting there waiting for the green drinking my beer, enjoying a cigarette  and watching my favourite you tube channel playing on the 12" dash screen.... A policeman came of his box and walked up to my car pointing at me... not sure what he wanted until he came right up to the door.... Turns out he wanted a cigarette so I sat my beer down and handed him one.

Unless I've missed something, you did say that you have two cans of alcohol to drink while you are driving home. That is very irresponsible behaviour, and is bound to affect your reflexes in an emergency situation, but you won't feel that way until it actually happens.

And yet on many occasions I have been stopped and breathe tested and on every occasion Iam under the legal limit.

go figure !!

I wrote until 6am, not from. But then, I've often had to be at railway stations or airports at 6am in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and there'd always be the odd few standing with a beer at that time. A bit like Pattaya in pre-Covid days, I suppose ????

To be fair I do recall what was known as “ early openers” pubs in Sydney years ago to cater I think for those finishing night shift.

Each to their own

I know from personal experience having lost a few friends to drug abuse that banning/reducing the availabilty of certain "soft drugs" can set the user on the much more dangerous path of "hard drugs".

Yep! And you as well as your lost friends was totally unaware of what they were doing? If one can´t find Champignons, one might as well eat white fly fungus.

Alcohol does lower your inhibitions though.

The argument being you may end up more inclined to break COVID-19 protocol's when your drunk.

I think your last statement may be a little narrow minded. We need to look at who works and runs bars and restaurants. Those low income earners that eat in large groups, live stacked together in rooms to save money and spend most of their free time In groups.

Now throw in the farangs that like to sit around for a few hours in groups, with these locals who spend a lot of time in their groups, plus the slow but sure degradation of ‘infection controls’ as more alcohol is consumed, I feel it’s pretty obvious why they consider banning of alcohol in restaurants and closing of bars to be considered a pertinent decision.

So now all the unemployed staff have to crowd more in the small living rooms as they have less money. That will fix it!

Sounds like you should lobby the government to lower the legal limit than to get angry at someone who knowingly stays within the limit.

BTW, 35 mins till beer O'Clock..

Yummy Yummy Leo 8 in my Tummy.

Have a great day Khun Possum.

There is only one answer, stop drinking and driving before you kill or maim someone, there are people dead today because of people like you, but of course as far as your concerned, that doesn't matter.

Of course there's not a Prohibition! The comment was made rather "tongue in cheek" but obviously went over your head. During Prohibition, alcohol was banned completely in the USA, whereas in the current situation in Thailand, as I have already pointed out, alcohol is still freely available at supermarkets etc.

And if you think I am impressed by your telling me that I need to be " a little more observant and knowledgeable" and posting in Thai - I am not, and as this is an English only Forum, you are actually breaking the rules:-

"FORUM RULES

English is the only acceptable language anywhere on ASEAN NOW, except within the Thai language forum, where of course using Thai is allowed. Short Thai translation of technical terms is permitted in specialty forums."

So I think you are the one who needs to be "a little bit more observant and knowledgeable" especially when posting on here - Hmmm?

The old chestnut of the 'gateway drug'... just like a drink of beer will lead you to start drinking methylated spirits.

I didn't say it WOULD lead to an addiction to hard drugs, I only implied that it COULD, due to having lost some friends that way.

But just to show people's ignorance of drug "abuse", I had a work colleague who worked in her spare time as a "Special" in the UK police force. During part of her training, her "teacher" during a lecture on the above subject said "Everybody who smokes marijuana is a drug addict, because they will end up taking heroin" And this came from a supposedly qualified police specialist!!!

Back in the 21st century, people used to live and work on the same planet, but nowadays, you could not survive without personal warp ships.

There are "groups" of people in all walks of life who congregate together. Do we hear the Government banning people from going to religious services/temples, for instance?
