As a Tourist Police Volunteer, based first in Lanna then in Isaan, I am familiar with several National Parks across the North of Thailand that, pre-covid, offered camping facilities during the "cold" season. The Thais were so enthusiastic having the opportunity to party and sleep outside in the cold air and frost! Maybe not so much partying these days. One of the most popular was (and probably still is) Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai Province. 2

They are tourists. There are two species of tourists : (1) foreign tourists who inhabit hot location e.g. beaches, go-go bars, pubs etc. (2) domestic tourists who like to chill in the mountains.

It matters cuz domestic tourism raises little money. It's the farangs who make it rain.
