Thailand is opening its borders while at the same time Austria is going into full lockdown after dealing with a fourth wave.

The government want to avoid a fifth, sixth or seventh wave.

Austria from today: full lockdown.

Germany: partial lockdown.

Covid rates increasing all over Europe and we have no winter yet.

Forget about the masses of European tourists coming to Thailand soon.

It appears, after nearly two years of the dreaded COVID ERA, that there isn't an accepted standard of protocol and measures as to how it's been handled.

Everywhere, it's all been approached differently - and everyone has had their share of mishandlings, ebbs and flows, surges and declines and noted positives - and surely shouldn't be looked upon in a cultural competitive mode, as in many instances it's perceive by way of a comparative and superlative race......and most of these notions have the usual fanciful manner in place.

One thing to keep in mind: the nasty bug isn't political - it will always have an upper hand as long as we continue to see it as such.

What we really should be fearful of are the convenient systems of establishment.

Since Thailand has suffered such a huge financial loss due to covid lockdown, border closures and travel restrictions, I propose they restart (on a limited basis) the multi-entry "border jumper special" visa/extension practice BUT, charge a 10,000 thb exit fee. Just line up at the border, passport in 1 hand, cash in the other, drop, stamp and on your way.

Of course, this will need to be coordinated and coupled with a "Fee For Private Opening" of Thai consulates where you arrive, line up, passport in 1 hand, cash in the other, drop, deny, return, rinse and repeat 2x and on your way back to the border. :wai:

Now, for reentry ideas....

You want people to catch Covid 19?

It can be a very unpleasant/horrifying experience and can even cause death.

But I'm sure that you are aware of that.

As Thailand has suffered reduced income due to a lack of tourist arrivals, I think it would only be fair to charge an "arrival tax" for future arrivals........say, 20,000 baht per person......to make up for the loss of income.

Bit like the bars doubling their beer prices because they have so few customers.

The Beijing Olympics will be held under the most onerous protocols imaginable with low risk to China. If any athletes try to gallivant out of their bubbles to traipse around Beijing, trying to defect, getting drunk, or even attacking people like the did at Tokyo they will find out quickly they are in a different world. Media coverage will be limited, as well

From the WSJ:

"As Covid-19 infections and deaths in the European Union eclipse those in the U.S., the region is confronting an ugly reality: Taming the Delta variant is proving harder than a virus-weary continent had hoped.

Fast-rising Covid-19 contagion in parts of Europe, including Germany, is sparking fears of another winter of full hospitals. Countries are rushing to roll out booster shots as evidence accumulates that last summer’s vaccinations are losing some of their efficacy."

The planet is so  far  away from getting a handle on this killer.

Japan seems to be doing alright

What is their secret?

Completely closed to tourism 20 months

Everybody tests before leaving Tokyo or Osaka airport, then 14 days home quarantine no public transportation allowed. 110 percent mask wearing compliant population, near zero vaccine hesitancy.

They have right-wing politicians like USA not  single one stands against masks or vaccination

In August they were near peak infection, now near zero.

Korea has very similar conditions but now in peak infection. Very interesting.

A vaccinated Austrian arrives. He has needs pre-flight test. He will be post flight tested. The chance of him to bring a new case to Thailand is minimal as been shown over the past 18 months or so of arrival programs all around the world. If a case is detected he can be isolated and treated, if even necessary, most people have sniffles. That is what the test and go and insurance is for right?

Why is it so bad to get covid from a foreigner anyway? If you can just hop on a train or go to work or Tesco and get it from one of the 45 percent of unvaccinated locals? The virus is never going away from now it is live with it or stay closed forever.

And you can also catch it from vaccinated locals as well. Even if 100% vaccination was reached it doesn’t matter as its NOT  a vaccine. A vaccine stops transmission and gives you immunity- this does neither, wake up
