I wonder if anyone could give some advice ?

My daughter and I are planning to move permanently to Thailand in July, but her Thai passport expires in April.

I don't have all the paperwork involved to obtain her new passport here (She is almost 16)

Her Thai mother(my ex wife) lives in Thailand and according to our Thai divorce papers, has custody of our daughter.

To get the passport renewed in London, they have advised me I need, amongst other things,a letter of consent from my ex wife, signed by her and certified by the 'district in Thailand' (she lives in Chumphon) Because she officially has custody of our daughter.

Knowing my ex wife as I do,if she ever got round to doing it, I would be amazed.

The Thai Embassy advise if she enters on her GB passport, she will need a visa for a stay of more than 30 days,as any British citizen would.

My question is :- Would there be a problem if she enters Thailand on say a 60 day tourist visa and gets her Thai passport renewed in Thailand with her mother and I ?

Would there be any problems if she then wanted to leave the country on her GB passport after 60 days ?

Obviously I would prefer for her to enter on a renewed Thai passport, but it may not be possible, given my ex wife's lethargy.

Any help/thoughts would be appreciated

When will she be traveling to here? There is no minimum amount of validity to enter Thailand. It only takes about a week or less to get Thai passport after she arrive here.

Best to avoid her entering on her UK passport. She would not need a tourist visa when entering her UK passport. She would get a 30 day visa exempt entry and then she could be extended for one year based upon her being a Thai national.

There would be no problem leaving on her UK passport.

Better to get and come in on new Thai passport.

Offer your ex wife some money to get the papers you need to you.  Cheaper in the long run.  Pay after you get the documents, Don't be stingy, if your daughter comes in on British PP she would have expenses going out and coming back on a new Thai PP plus all the inconveniences of travel now.

There are plenty of threads on this forum saying that a thai citizen can enter the kingdom on an expired thai passport without issues.  Therefore no need to leave or extend a visa.  Get a new passport once in Thailand.

That was before covid 19. At this time a valid passport is needed to register for Thailand Pass and etc.

The Thai embassy will issue a emergency travel document if a passport has expired.

We are travelling in July.

Plenty of time.

The Thai Embassy in London have replied to my emails, but their answers are very vague.

I did ask if she could enter on GB passport and her expired Thai passport and her GB passport not be stamped, but they just replied she needs a visa if more than 30 days.

Trouble is, if she gets a visa, surely she will trapped in a never ending cycle of getting new visas even if we replace her Thai passport once there ?

Trouble is,similar documents are required to obtain one as a passport.

Her mum having custody on the divorce certificate seems to be the stumbling block.

Yes quite agree.

Money is not the problem.

Getting her to go to get the necessary documents certified is.

She lives in Chumphon and rarely goes out,due to a fear of catching Covid.

I suggest you ask your daughter to talk to her mother about granting consent for her to get a new passport. She might have better luck they you will. You would think she would do it if she wants to see her daughter. The consent form can be downloaded here. https://image.mfa.go.th/mfa/0/zE6021nSnu/เอกสาร/หนังสือให้ความยินยิม.pdf

Immigration would not stamp here in as a Thai if they saw her UK passport.

She does not need a visa if she stays longer than 30 days. They think it cannot be extended which is wrong. She can apply for a one year extension as I mentioned before.

If she enters on her UK passport and then gets a Thai passport here she would have to fly out and back to change passports.
