The quick and painless answer to that question would be "Certainly not TRT" However, feeling disappointed , is not the same as being disenfranchised.

Your wife's family can vote for anyone they please ... or 'no' vote as well. Their right to vote has NOT been diminished. Never have people been able to vote for people not eligible to hold office.

I was rather fond of TRT in the first term .. liked the platform well enough when Thaksin started to run. Many of my Thai friends felt the same way. However that changed quickly when Thaksin started to line his pockets and ignore the rest of Thailand's issues thinking he had enough clout to do so. Follow that up with tearing down the checks and balances that MUST be present to have a democracy .. and we were left with an elected dictator. Take some time to study democracy ... read up about the tyranny of the majority .... then talk to your wife's family and explain it.

Coalition governments are a bit scary to me .. and weak ones are worse than almost anything, but I predict we will see one after the next elections. For people that liked TRT .. you can hold that out as a hope. a week coalition government that after a year will have to dissolve leading to new elections. (for those of us that love Thailand .. we should hope for a strong coalition government that lasts 3-5 years! ... giving a chance for some stability and normalcy!)

right or wrong , TRT's removal has left a large hole which will not be filled in the short time frame available ( the window isn't even open yet ).

whilst this is possibly by design it is very short sighted as there are disenfranchised voters ,

whether you care to admit it or not .

No ... Mid .. whether you care to admit it or not ... they only feel disenfranchised, They are not, in fact in such a condition. If they wish to be angry ... please point them to the people responsible for this ... TRT and the EExecutives thereof that paid small parties to contest the elections. Those guys KNEW the penalty for being caught, yet they did it anyways!

Now ... back to the solution .... No new party needs to be formed, just have former TRT folks that were NOT excluded .. MP's etc ... join an existing group. Bring in some $$ .. and get to work!

Sonthi was talking about an amnesty for the TRT guys practically as soon as the verdict was read, so I wouldn't be surprised if the TRT was back in some guise of another in time for the election.

Over half the ex-TRT MPs are in groups that have defected from the Thaksinistas and that have indicated a willingness to run in new parties probably close to the military. Undoubtedly the court dissolution punishment verdict upset the military and their plans. Can these guys be dragged back into the next election? That is probably difficult but a lot of them will run proxies in new parties. Then the military may be able to keep the Dems out who they dont want or at least limit them, oh and also keep the rump TRT out. At that point no doubt it will be amnesty time for the ex-TRT executives who played ball (we could say accepted their fate and showed contrition :o).

At this moment to talk about the TRT now in the same way as it was before is misleading. The party has fractured and even within the rump there seem to be splits between the small PTV wing, the larger Chaturon group and the small Northern group with a bunch of ex-NE MPs seemingly drifting rudderless around and dreaming of a return of either the T-man or the semi-senile "hero" of Ban Rom Khlao.

New government can be formed by year-end, says PM

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont on Thursday voiced confidence in a possible move to bring forward the date of the general election November 25, enabling a new government to be formed by the end of this year.

Gen. Surayud said he believed the new government could be formed within 45 days of the election.

Should the election be set for November 25, he said, instead of late December, the new government could be established prior to the New Year holiday.

He said the move to bring forward the election by 20 days would not negatively affect the application procedures for establishing new political parties.

He had discussed the alternatives with the Election Commission and the Constitution Drafting Assembly and they shared a common view that there is ample time remaining to establish political parties.

The premier said he foresees the constitution draft being considered and approved by no later than July 6, after which a campaign to familiarise the public with the draft constitution, and study its merits, will take place.

Should the people validate the constitution by accepting it in the referendum, the general election

would be held as everyone expects, Gen. Surayud said.

Sodsri: I would have to step down

Election Commissioner Sodsri Sattayatham has expressed concern that the general election, which was tentatively moved up to Nov 25 this week, may not take place as planned. Mrs Sodsri said her concern followed an amendment to Article 287 of the draft constitution proposed by Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) member Watchara Hongprapas.

Mr Watchara proposed that members of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) be prohibited from running for seats in the House of Representatives, the Senate and from being members of independent agencies.

One person has suggested that people who are no longer in service to the country in the CDC be barred from holding any office etc?

Nah ......

try again ??

Without her and Mr Praphan, the five-member EC would be reduced to three, which would fall short of the number of commissioners required to hold elections. The general election was this week rescheduled for Nov 25 by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.

Another problem is that if Mrs Sodsri and Mr Praphan were removed from the EC, the commission would not be able to find replacements before the election. Election commissioners must be appointed by the Senate, which does not currently exist. The National Legislative Assembly is also not authorised to appoint election commissioners.

I looked online and could NOT see that this proposal has been passed :D If it is passed it is likely to be deleted as it is unworkable :D Then again ...

PM believes elections can be held sooner than expected

The Prime Minister believes that elections can be held earlier than scheduled due to excellent progress from relevant agencies.

Prime Minister Gen Surayud Chulanont reported that public opinion surveys and elections may be held earlier than scheduled due to agreement among members of the Constitution Drafting Assembly and the Election Commission of Thailand of excellent progress. The Constitution Drafting Assembly believes that public opinion surveys will take place no later than July 6th, though incomplete public understanding of constitutional details may result in some delays.

The Prime Minister added that revisions to the Council for Democratic Reform's 15th Announcement will be up to the National Legislative Assembly to decide. Gen Surayud said that dissolved political parties electing to use their old names in forming new political parties will have to check with the Election Commission.

Govt. changes election date

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont indicates that the government still cannot set the exact date for the general election, adding that the government will try its utmost to hold the election as soon as possible.

The premier says the government is reconsidering the election date which was earlier scheduled to take place on November 25th by a meeting between the Cabinet, the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA), and the chairman of the Election Commission (EC).

As for a secret budget of 800 million baht for the army’s procurement of electronic equipments, the premier says the budget was proposed by the TOT Plc. and the government has yet decided to approve it. Gen.Surayud affirms the resignation of the ex-Caretaker President of TOT, Wuthiphong Phreabjariyawat (วุฒิพงษ์ เพรียบจริยวัฒน์), has nothing to do with the secret budget.

There is a large billboard (in Thai) at the expressway toll booth at Prachachuen on the second stage coming from Muang Thong Thani towards the CBD stating that elections will be held in December, I'll get a pic of it tomorrow and post it up.

Meanwhile, Matchima leader Somsak yesterday introduced two of the group's members to 2,000 Khon Kaen residents and delivered a speech on its policies.

"During the past four years, we worked with Thaksin. We were counted as the same family. But now we are split up into three groups. The first group joined those who are expected to be the majority in the [next] Parliament and will form the government," Somsak said in his speech.

"The second group are those who want to continue the same policies [as Thai Rak Thai] and develop policies for people. This is the Matchima Group. The third group is the thugs rallying at Sanam Luang."

The two members, who are expected to be MP candidates, included Thaikorn Polsuwan, a witness against Thai Rak Thai in the electoral fraud case that led to the party's dissolution.

From the end of the article in the Nation "Shaky start for Ruam Jai Thai party"

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/06/27...es_30037903.php

It sounds like the Matchima strategy in the Isaan will be to claim they are the true inheritors of TRT polices, and as Somsak said not "the thugs rallying at Sanam Luang".

Thailand in urgent need to move forward

The country is faced with three vital tasks: democracy, the South, and the economy

By ABHISIT VEJJAJIVA

There are so many questions about Thai politics today, but what we should be concerned about is the future of this country, given that we have lost almost two years where we have been mired in political conflicts and other crises. While all this has been happening, the world has not stopped turning and other countries are making progress, making advances in economics and in other fields _ so basically Thailand cannot afford to lose more time.

To me, there are three vital tasks that are facing us today. The three tasks are first, to restore democracy, second, to ensure that we put an end to the unrest in the South, and third, of course, is to revive the economy.

BANGKOK, June 28 (TNA) - Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont said Thursday that whether or not Thailand's general election can be held November 25 as planned by the government would depend on readiness, but that despite organisational challenges, an early date is best for the country.

It seems like a debate is actually ongoing between fatcions in the government, NLA, CNS and CDA about when the election should be held and that this is now getting public airing. Fixing a date ASAP would be the best thing.
