Are Vitamins Supplemnents Mportant? -- One A Day --

I am 40, a bit overweight, on diet.

no problems with health.

I live in SE Asia from 4 years.

I met so many expats who always take these vitamins pills -- like one a day -- the food I eat is absolutely normal, nothing missing from my diet.

What do you think??

I don't want to take something useless (also not so cheap) and get addicted to something my body doesn't need at the moment, but so many people taking them (also youngsters) made me think that perhaps I am wrong

If you are eating fresh and healthy food every day you shouldn't need vitamin supplements. All the vitamins that are required on a daily basis should be contained in your food.

Fresh fruit eaten raw, fresh vegetables steamed sparingly are a much better source of vitamins and minerals than manufactured vitamins (?) in a pill.

Fresh seafood for your omega oils.

All plentiful in Thailand.

One Pill a day is a waste of time. Unless you are a kid. So unless you are going into vitamin suppilimentation seriously, don't bother. I have been taking lots for 35yrs and I am not addicted. Very well though......

I work in a teaching hospital and I asked one of the medical Professors the same question.

He said that the best thing is to have a good diet and the only supplements he recommended was Zinc - good for the immune system and skin, and selenium (in very small doses) for males as there was evidence it was good as a prostate cancer prevention. He stressed that both weren't essential to take.

I take a tablet of Zinc daily when I remember.

I do (in fact i take a few different kinds based on my requirements).

I think the best thing if you seriously wish to look into it is to go into a specialist shop and have a consultation, or poss something over the net. I know in the UK staff at well known stores such as Holland & Barrett offer free qualified advice, there is probably something similar here. They can take into consideration your general diet and help you work out what you need. Even if eating a fresh healthy diet you may be missing out on some benificial vitamins. (Also be cautious if self medicating different vitamins, some can cause an overdose of vitamins for the system and can actually be detrimental to health, keep that into consideration pls)

If you dont want to go too far into it all, then a decent chelated, time-released (worth the few extra pennies) multi-vitamin is a good all rounder. Some good brands can even be bought at lower cost online.

Some herbal medicines/vitamins can also help with speeding up the metabolism, and other natural stimulus, which may help weight loss and bowel function etc.

Lastly, something that many people take is half an asprin a day. It helps thin the blood and thus aid prevention of clots. Especially helpful if you are a lover of heavy foods such as red meat.

Best of luck on your diet. :o

My experience with vitamins has been very positive.

I have been taking a daily multi-vitamin tablet since mid-2000. Since then I have not had a cold or flu.

As I am in my mid-50s, and previously experienced colds every year , and a flu every 2 years or so, I don't put it down to coincidence.

i would be very surprised if you were getting the requied daily dosages of vitamins and minerals from your diet. most good health practisioner will recommend taking a multi vitamin everyday, although make sure you check out what daily dosages you should be getting from each ingredient, as you can pay alot for sometablest that are still quite weak, like blackmores, especially in thailand.

Doctors know very little about ultimate vitamin supplimentation. So NEVER ask one.

I have been taking lots of Vitamins for over 35yrs and apart from an Enlarged Prostate, which is virtually guaranteed to occur when you get over 65yrs, I am as 'Fit as a Butcher's Dog'!

Don't bother to say I have been wasting my money. I have heard it all before.

Many years ago, my diabetic consultant in London was most insistent that take Omega3 fish oils, and ever since I have taken 1 capsule (1000mg) per day. They lower your triglycerides, help prevent blood clotting amongst many other benefits - many related to a healthy heart .

Also, for many years I have taken cod liver oil tablets to protect my knee joints. A year or so back, I started to experience a lot of pain in my knees, and a friend suggested doubling the dosage, so I did - and it worked - no more pain. :o

Can anyone recommend a source for CHELATED zinc in Bangkok? GNC sells zinc tablets (for a small fortune IMO) but not chelated. Thanks.
