New Economic party-list MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan tendered his resignation as a member of parliament in the middle of the general debate today (Thursday), saying that he has not felt happy in his legislative role for the past two years.

Taking to the floor at about 5pm, Mingkwan said that he feels, after almost eight years, that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has been in the office long enough, while the country’s economy is nose-diving.

He said that he doubts the prime minister’s leadership ability and vision, citing some of the latter’s questionable suggestions. For instance, he proposed opening more pawn shops to solve the problem of household debt, told farmers to raise fish instead of planting rice when they are hit by floods, suggested people pray when there is a storm, threatened the use of military trucks to deliver goods when truckers threatened to go on strike and advised Thai people to raise two chickens per household to address the poverty problem.

Simplistic solutions from a simplistic mind with no grasp of the harsh realities the majority of people face every day in order to survive.

Thai politics is a snake pit, just like everywhere else in the world. As such politicians deserve zero respect, non more so than the self appointed coup leader who displays little more than a thin skin, no economic literacy and zero understanding of the lives of real people. In coming months we will see more rats leaving the sinking ship that is the ruling party as they scurry for self preservation. The sooner there is another revolution and power returned to the people the better for this deeply damaged country.

Politics is not where one makes quick decisions affecting their future. He may be using this wave of opposition to not only bail on the Prayut government 8n re-election danger but perhaps find a political refuge for his future.

To his credit, he is the only one from his party criticizing the government from the beginning even though his party is part of Prayut's coalition. He even criticized his party of timidly conforming and kowtowing the Prayut and his administration. It was reported that he asked his party executive board before they joined the coalition whether they will support Prayut to be premier or not and party said no but changed their mind later. He resigned as party leader but remained as MP until yesterday. It is a suprise but not a shock. I respect him that he has been steadfast on his principle and integrity.

The people have never been in power.  In Thailand people sell their votes and are happy to do so.  A few drinks is well worth a piece of paper that will make no difference.  The ones who have the best opportunity to rake in money (which they have done and will do whatever party) will change but the people will continue to be beholden to them and will continue to pay bribes and defer to civil servants and police.  The only way the system will change is if there is a real coup, led by young field rank offices who wish to make a change (if there are any) rather than wait to beome rich generals.

To this day I still don't get why someone as intelligent as Thanathorn appeared failed to read the rules and check his share portfolio..

his party was part of the governing coalition, so good direction.

However, he should push to switch to opposition.

there are rumours that the former flower minister prompaw and another 20 MP expelled from the PPP are joining this very party

Thamanat likely to join NEP with 20 ousted MPs: source

There was no amount of preparation and rule following that would have prevented his fate. Even he was aware of this.
