Honorary doctorate proposed for exiled cop for human trafficking investigation in Thailand

Chulalongkorn University’s Office of the Student Affairs has announced that it will propose that an honorary doctorate in public administration from the university be conferred upon exiled Pol Maj-Gen Paween Pongsirin for his outstanding role in exposing the human trafficking network in southern Thailand over six years ago.

 

The former deputy commissioner of the 8th Region Provincial Police Bureau and chief of the anti-human trafficking investigation is currently living in exile in Australia, after he escaped from Thailand when he was tipped off that his life was in danger.

 

Pol Maj-Gen Paween’s investigation led to 153 people, including local businessmen, officials and politicians and military officers, including Lt-Gen Manus Kongpan, a specialist attached to the Royal Army, being implicated in the trafficking racket. Lt-Gen Manus was indicated, among others, in a military court and convicted. Manus died while serving his prison term.

Never heard that story before, could make it into a movie

Apparently, in Thai social media, the story doesn't end as stated here. The reason Paween's life was endanger, he tried to resign but his resignation was refused, and was given 2 choices. Neither would allow him to be alive today (based on previous people given the same choices), so he fled Thailand the next day. The path of payoffs and permissions led to another general who is currently part the government with lots of watches and to the top, higher than elected officials.

It was huge 6 years ago. This top cop was put in charge to investigate the bodies found buried hidden in the jungle.  As usual the military and police involved. His life was in danger and all the pathetic excuse of a general prayut said was if he had proof to meet him and show the evidence.  A bloody disgrace which was brushed under the carpet then and still is now

This story was widely covered ~ 2015, and was a HUGE embarrassment for the (at the time) ruling military junta.

 

He will not be getting an honorary degree from CU.

 

The student body president pushing this, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, is himself lucky he hasn't been disappeared or forced to flee, yet.

I just wonder how the poor guy is managing financially.

Pol Maj-Paween Pongsirin, tell them to send you the documents but don't come back to thailand if you value your life!

I think this gentleman would be very happy to be forgotten rather than some University activist bringing this up again.

As for the concern as to how he is surviving ,he was a senior officer and I am sure he would have had a suitable retirement fund somewhere

Numerous attached skeletons in their respective closets. 

A long long sordid history of like activity. 

 

I could imagine that the particular suspected circles would prefer that all this would go away or swept under the proverbial rug. 

This type of attention creates a very uncomfortable atmosphere. 

 

I suspect, before long, we won't be hearing much about this related story through mainstream avenues.

If he was the honest figure we would like, he would not. If he was compromised before saying 'no more' we should still say thank you.

One day Thailand should have a Truth and Reconciliation Commission like South Africa.

That Lt-Gen Manus, who was the top sacrificial lamb, has died in prison. This conveniently cuts the pipeline/trail of funds to the higher ups. Manus was quoted as saying "when everything was going well all was shared but when the problem arose, he was the only one with the problem".  Silence of the lambs.

In normal circumstances, he probably wouldn't of been heard or seen again [that's what they do]. 

These days, I believe the stronghold and traditional authorities are using this twisted martyred image to their own odd advantage.

 

If you haven't noticed, the contemporary style of selected demonization is quite varying in degree. The less you talk about it the less unneeded attention it draws.
