Rude cop transferred after filmed altercation with lady restaurant owner

A policeman in Ubon Ratchathani in the north east of Thailand has been transferred to inactive duties after he was filmed behaving badly.

The cop and a colleague - off duty and half dressed as police - had gone into a restaurant in Khong Jiam district and asked if they were still open, reported Thai Rath.

The female owner who was sitting down eating with a lady teacher friend said they were.

The owner was invited to sit down as though she were a hostess in a bar. She politely said it was not that kind of place.

The men ordered whisky and soda and when asked if they wanted food one said 'no', not if there are no girls to sit with them.

The banter soon got much worse and the teacher got involved saying she was married to a policeman.

The cop was rude to her suggesting that the cop may not be real and even if he was she was probably just his bit on the side, what with her poor looks.

Outraged by the encounter the owner went to complain to the acting chief of the Khong Jiam police who promised a resolution by the end of Tuesday.

True to his word he turned up with the rude cop to apologize and present a basket of goodies to the lady.

She accepted the apology but not the basket.

Acting chief Pol Col Surasit Suthiphan said that the case had three aspects.

It was a case of an off duty officer but the lady had made a formal complaint and there was the matter of ill-discipline.

The cop concerned has been transferred to provincial HQ while it is determined if the lady wants to press charges.

She has already told the press she did not.

I suspect that many of the policemen have become police for the added macho behaviour that they c  they can throw around, not all but many...

For most of us, I would prefer the cops here, unless there is a real need for one. Then, it is roll of the dice. At least the cops here stay out of my face, and when they do hassle me, I push back alot. I mouth off to them, I raise my voice, and I make a real stink, if they are engaging in "petty mordida". Usually they back down, and if not I give them 200 baht. Rarely more than that. Impossible to do in the US. And if you need law enforcement, outstanding forensics, or a good detective, you can get it back there. Not here. Not likely.

They do not deserve my respect. Respect has to be earned, and should never, ever be freely given, based on a position. How about issuing some DUI's? How about pulling people over for reckless driving? The police here are not law enforcement. They are franchisees. The franchisees who represent a morally bankrupt administration, posing as puritans, are cracking down on a financial pillar of contemporary Thai society. How does a reasonable person even respond to this? Best to not respond at all. Fake purity in the worst possible form. Not convincing on any level.

So police can drink in a restaurant without ordering food... okay.

An apology and a gift basket.  This type of conduct should involve disciplinary action.

A government should not influence  the way people treat others. People act the way they do because of their own mentality.  They choose  their  own behavior, not the government.

Transferred to inactive duties from inactive duties then ????
