Guderian
I don't like zero alcohol beers, but prefer to drink something a bit weaker than the usual 5%+ ABV brews here. Singha Light at just 3.5% was perfect, until they decided years ago that it wasn't strong enough and increased the alcohol content to around 4.5%, and also spoilt the taste. So my bevvy of choice became Tiger Light, expensive for what it is but only 4.1% alcohol and a lowish-calorie beer. Now for several weeks every shop in Pattaya seems to be out of it, with no sign of any new deliveries. One lady told me 'Tiger Light no have factory', did it burn down or something? Does anyone know if and when we might see it again, and if not then what other beers with alcohol less than 5% but greater than, say, 3%, are on sale here? KannikaP
Try soda shandies 50/50 beer & soda, then it will be 2.5% for the same volume. Edited February 28, 2022 by KannikaP

MajorTom
I like the MyBeer. (new brand name for Singha Light) Tastes like beer, but still reasonably light. I used to drink San Miguel Light but got fed up with the production quality. Every time you drink it some random bottle seems to be foul. I have seen san miguel also has a "zero" now. Not sure why its called that since its actually 3% ABV.

Will B Good
As a kid, I am sure beer was around 2%........even at 17 I could drink 6 or 7 pints (not big and not clever). There is definitely a market, I feel, albeit price sensitive, for weaker beers that you can drink in greater volumes without getting wasted.

Yeah i know its labeled 5%, but there is something strange about that beer. I can drink 10 bottles of the stuff and still be reasonably sober. I can not do that with singha, leo etc. which is supposed to be the same.

Thanks for that, I didn't realise that SM Zero was actually 3%, that sounds like it would suit me fine if it tastes OK. It's probably down to my racist colonialist binary white male privilege, or something like that, but for some reason I'd assumed that San Miguel Zero would have no alcohol in it, lol. Right, I'm off to the 7-eleven to seek out a can or bottle.

It is a slightly acquired taste because it is (obviously) not as sweet as the sugar-laden LEO. I worked at that my choices were:- 2 pints of Thatchers Cider = 600 calories 5 bottles of Tiger Light = 600 calories 2 large bottles of LEO = 630 calories 10 bottles of San Mig. 'Zero' = 600 calories

Darn, I know I've seen it somewhere, but I've tried the local 7-elevens, Lotus Express, Mini Big C, and Friendship, a store that specialises in farang food and drink, and haven't found any. The 7-eleven had Heineken 0.0, which really is an alcohol-free beer, and also San Miguel Blanca, their version of a wheat beer. I like a wheat beer and normally drink the Hoegaarden brewed in Vietnam, so I bought a couple of bottles of this stuff to try it, though at 5.4% ABV it's going the wrong way, lol. Does Makro have it, I've definitely seen it somewhere in Pattaya. If not then I'll just have to trawl a few of the booze wholesalers. I also saw it on sale online (isn't that supposed to be illegal now???), but at over 1,600 Baht a case. If you join up at that site you can get it for 1,060 Baht a case, which is still crazily expensive for a weak beer.
rott
Up in the Nakhon I've tried a couple of wholesalers and one 7 but no joy. I'm off out shortly see if I have any luck in a wholesaler on the way to the local BigC. Do they want to sell the stuff or not.

If you're really intent on trying it and don't mind the price, there's this site I mentioned before: https://wishbeer.com/products/san-mig-zero-1x24-330ml-3 Weirdly, the prices have changed since this morning, but they offer COD and free delivery if you buy two cases, so there's no risk that I can see. Mr G thanks for that. Negative at BigC and the wholesaler. So that works out at about 42 per can. My thing is that I don't drink at home,* I am a pub goer and I was hoping for a local stockist so that I could cajole a local bar into putting it in for me. So a bar/resto whatever here would need to put it out at about 65 which is bearable. *In the house I'd rather just have a cup of tea. Life is never simple.
ourdon
Have tried various "light" beers. While San Miguel is just palatable the rest seem to be just "Sex in a canoe" Were these originally developed for the "People that don't want to get drunk but like to urinate" market ???

Guderian
I tried Makro yesterday and there was no joy there either. I had a look in the local Lotus's Express or Farmfresh, whatever it's called these days, and they didn't have it. I tried a booze wholesaler who was recommended to me for having everything, and at least they'd heard of SM Zero, even if they didn't have any. About the only place I haven't tried is Family Mart as the four local branches are all closed for refurbishment as part of the Central partnership and upgrade project.
rott
Yes I think we are definitely struggling here, except for wishbeer. You did well to get that link I can't get any sense out of them at all. Possibly there's some Philippino bars restos in Bangkok. Could be worth a try. We shall see.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the local 7-eleven I use (there are five of them on the street where I live) to get a banana, so while I was there I quickly checked out the beer chillers. Lo and behold, they actually had the SM Zero in stock! I relieved the chiller of its burden of a dozen bottles, at 38 Baht each, and then in the late PM I tried one (followed by another one, and then another one, lol). Rather pleasant, all in all, crisp and clean with no sweetness, so the Thais won't like it, this is not a beer for Leo lovers. The Zero in the name doesn't stand for zero alcohol as I'd assumed it would, it means zero carbohydrates, which is how they get the calorie count down so low. I dropped by the same shop this morning hoping to pick up some more, but it seems that a dozen bottles was the lot, their entire stock! I tried another big 7-eleven in the opposite direction but they didn't have any and didn't have a space for it on their shelves. There's one large 7-eleven left to try after 5:00 this afternoon, I don't think the two small ones are worth bothering with. Anyway, I like the taste and it's exactly what I'm looking for, I can drink it until the cows come home without doing too much damage to my liver or waistline. Just a shame that it's so difficult to find, but hopefully that will improve. Worth the effort.
rott
Well you're the man Mr G, top player. Depending on whether or not this thunder turns to rain I'll be near the biggest 7 in town in an hour or so. I finally found a booze wholesaler selling SM Zero by the case. Not cheap at 960 Baht a box, in fact more pricy than either of the "premium" beers, San Mig Light or Heineken. That works out a 40 Baht a bottle, so it's still cheaper buying it at the 7-eleven (38 Baht), but they don't usually sell it by the case. I saw it in Big C at 41 Baht a bottle, and also in a mom & pop shop in Jomtien at 42 Baht. Hopefully, as it becomes a bit more mainstream, it might be sold a bit more cheaply by the wholesalers.
