Fears for Thailand’s economy over Ukraine war with rising inflation rates and loss of confidence

by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor

thai-economic-fears-rise-over-ukraine-war.jpg

The Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce Sanan Angubolkul has warned that the war in Ukraine could last for quite a while and will have a deteriorating effect on Thailand’s economy with reduced consumer confidence and spending power. It comes as oil and energy prices worldwide have surged with Thai National Shippers’ Council Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk confirming that already exports in the second quarter will be down by $4 billion to $5 billion.

Thai exporters say that shipments will be off by between $4 billion and $5 billion by the end of June. At the same time, the insecurity caused by the war will impact world travel and tourism as well as consumer confidence at home.

Thais told to beware of Russia’s sharp power, uphold principles rather than taking sides

By Thai PBS World’s Regional Desk

Thailand, notably its divided society, must act on principles rather than taking sides or remaining neutral over a Russia-Ukraine conflict that is set to develop into a new cold war and reshape global geo-politics, scholars say.

Show some humanity, support Ukraine and don't blame ordinary Russians

Anyone who has spent some time in Thailand has met them, usually in bars nursing a drink for several hours and regaling anyone who'll listen to their bigoted views on Thailand, convinced that because you might be the same skin color - usually white - that makes you all part of the same "club".
