Illicit trade, consumption of wild animals in Thailand risk spreading diseases

Featured Replies

Thailand has launched a national campaign to crack down on the smuggling and consumption of wild animals that would usually be smuggled into the country en route to neighboring countries after it has been found that the wild animals could cause the spread of an epidemic.

Mr. Rattaphon Pitakthepsombat, who works for the UNDP, said that the animals could easily cause an infection, adding that viruses can be transmitted from animals to humans.

He warned that this could cause severe consequences.

A survey Dr. Petch Manopawitr, who works for the Asian Elephant and Tiger Conservation in Thailand, said a survey they had conducted found that Thai people, especially those who live in urban areas and those who are in the 18-30 age group like to try wild animal meat.

He added that his organization launched the “Kind Dining” Campaign to promote sustainable consumption and inform people of the risks of causing an epidemic.

What a load of Tosh

Thais love to eat anything that walks, flies, crawls or slithers if its free.

EG Rats are selling at 80 Baht / KG, and every day i witness people setting traps for everything imaginable from small Birds to Monitor Lizards

These are Country Folk, who enjoy eating these " delicacies "

wild animals are even a healthier option to organic once. So it's not poverty which makes some people to crave for game.

In europe, and elsewhere, hunters make a good living, by selling their pray at prices many times over the price of farmed animals. Even boars with african flu can be eaten.

Actually, culling excess of wild animals slowers spread of disease, that including to farmed animals.

That, if those people are not vegetarians/vegans and not anti hunting.

If those mentioned organisations are serious in their work, they should give an alternative to meat eating - vegetarian diet
