Looks like Toyota is back in the game...

 

I doubt they will be selling it in Thailand anytime soon though, still not enough competition in the Thai market and they can still sell plenty of their outdated ICE models here.

The issue is it's not really a Toyota.

 

It does nothing to keep Toyota profitable, if they sold all of these and none of their legacy cars they would have to shut all their factories.

 

Things will start happening for Toyota when we see them convert their existing factories to EV.

 

It is however a step in the right direction.

Note that in "January," 1 of  every 5 newly registered vehicles in the R.Y.1 vehicle category was a 100% electric BEV vehicle....a good start to the year....result of end of 2024 promotions I guess.  January was a BIG month for BEVs.    BYD Dolphin and BYD Sealion 7 are the number 1 and 2, respectively, most registered BEVs so far in 2025 with the MG4 Electric coming in at 3rd and closely followed by the Deepal S07 in 4th position.

 

Total registrations of 100% electric vehicles in Thailand in February 2025 totaled 5,164 units | Decreased by -58.3% compared to the previous month and increased by 42.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. BYD Dolphin is the champion, followed by AION V / ORA Good Cat / MG 4 / AION HYPTEC HT

BYD's downfall started 13 months ago. They now have falling sales in 10 of the last 13 months.

Brand loyalty is a shallow pond in the muddy waters of Chinese car manufacturing.

ALL car sales have been down in the past months, up to approximately 18 months ago. 

 

So OilWorkers point that 'EV' Car sales are down is accurate, but he deliberately and conveniently  avoids another truth because it contradicts his rhetoric. 

 

ICE sales are down more than EV sales - this as a % of the yearly market share, EV sales have increased.

 

I'm really not sure what the underlying agenda is here...   its fairly simple - Sales are down, EV sales have been impacted less so than ICE sales - thats about it.

Had to take the Sealion 7 back to BYD Mukdahan today as  the rear roof plastic panel was not fitted correctly. There was a 3 to 5mm difference in the fitting between the left and right sides.

I was a bit peeed off as I initially thought it was the roof panel that was the problem and I had visions of guys with blunt screwdrivers and hammers fixing the problem.

Bit difficult for wifey to see when she picked it up a couple of weeks ago.

Mechanics got out the computer and I guess they checked the panel installation diagrams before repairing, which was a good sign.

That fixed they connected the car to the computer and checked everything, before washing and cleaning the car as part of the service.

I also got some tips on the info system and how to change languages. I'm going to stick with Thai once I'm reasonably sure of the Thai/English equivelant.

Wifey is still fairly scared of experimenting but we've started going to different chargers to see what to do.

I can see a new phone coming up for Sup as hers doesn't have the magnetic charging.

Really love the car and the different people we meet at charging stations are very helpful. 🙂

BYD sales "within" Thailand may be down compared to the overall Thailand BEV market but on a worldwide basis BYD sales are booming...growing....a 41% increase from 2023 to 2024.   

 

And regarding BYD sales in Thailand, well, there is ton more competition...a bigger, wider choice of BEV brands to choose from...many more brands in Thailand now compared to a year or so ago.   But BYD is still the 800 pound guerilla in Thailand for overall BEV sales.

 

And let's not forget falling sales for ICE and EV in Thailand over the last year or so due to high household debt, much tougher financing rules, etc.

The numbers are showing a bit of a mixed bag at the moment. In the last 12 months BEV sales as a fraction of all vehicle sales have fallen in 6 out of 12 months YoY.

4 out of the last 6 months have seen the fraction of BEV falling YoY.

Time will tell, but it could be that we have reached a BEV saturation point around 20%.

i've had my sealion 7 for about seven weeks now, and it meets my needs while living up to my expectations. the software could use some improvements, but i'm confident future updates will refine many aspects ...

 

i've tested charging with different providers, and most of the time, it was smooth sailing. i did encounter a few minor hiccups, but nothing major. i'm excited for my upcoming long road/hoiday  trip (2,000–4,000 km) without charging concerns, because they are penty of chargers everywhere ...

 

for my wife, i've adjusted all the vehicle settings to make driving feel almost identical to her petrol car. for her, the key features are climate control, seat memory, "gear  and P" selection, and starting or stopping the car ... so far so good ...

it was the same for us since it was our first ev too ...

 

after a few weeks, everything will feel completely natural ... you will get use to the smooth, comfortable driving with plenty of power, no more turning off the engine just to run into 7/11... and so on!

New subsidies and government financial incentives for end users have played significant roles. In 2023, Chinese companies accounted for 82% of the BEVs sale , and they could become more prominent given that BYD plans to start operations in 2024. The most popular EVs in Thailand are also BYD.

Those figures don't include cars registered by 31st January 2024 which was the closing date for cars that were purchased by 31st December 2023 which  benefited from the B150,000 subsidy so if we take 76,314 registrations for 2023 and add 13,653 registrations for January 2024 Total EV car sales for 2023 was 89,967

for 2024 total number of EV car registrations was 70,137 but for sales number we need to exclude January 2024 registration figires of 13,,653  which brings total down to 56,484 but we then add January 2025 EV car registration figures of 12,376 which include all EV car sales sold before 31st December 2024 which benefited  from the B100,000 susbidy which ended 31st December 2024 total number of EV  car sales in 2024 was 68,860
