or six compact EVs at around Bt500K each....tough choice. 😁

Decisions desicions ... think I'm going to wimp out of getting the MG Urban, as previously suggested. Car and myself are way too practical.

... can't see owning 2 vehicles that do the same thing

... one a bit my comfy to drive

... other a bit more interior room & cargo area

If selling the ZS, doubtful, that leaves spending about 200k for basically a lifetime warranty, which we may never neeed. Along with, by the time the ZS warranty expires 4+ yrs, the Urban will probably be obsolete itself.

Can't see putting on 500k kms on the ZS, (30 yrs of driving 17k a yr) and well within the battery operating range, of 1M kms, without an oops.

Watched a couple YT vids about the Urban, all positive, with exception of it's ride on the highway, and compared to the MG4, which doesn't win any awards for highway comfort & road noise, which was the main draw for us to the ZS, which itself is no luxury car ride, but nicer than most entry sedans.

Oh well, Happy Motoring

Well, my next door neighbor now has a GAC Hyptec HT EV setting in his driveway. He replaced one of his ICEV. He said the biggest reason in getting an EV was reduced fuel costs as him and his wife drive a lot of kilometers each year. Of the 10 houses on my soi in my Bangkok moobaan that makes 6 of the 10 homes having an BEV.

The new BYD Han is a very interesting and premium car in at the 2.0+MB range. for sure it will be very strong and more expensive competitor to the IM5, CLA250+, maybe Model 3 Performance.

it has rear wheel steering and 21" rims, looks very aerodynamic to reach 1000km Chinese range with that 102 kWh battery, real range likely be around 700+km. if the software is good, then it can be real killer here. there are very few nice EV sedans, like the Seal, IM5, CLA250+, Mazda 6E in Thailand under 2.0MB. Not everyone wants a SUV, specially if flooding is not an issue. the IM5 is my first sport sedan, and I'm loving it so much.

The entry-level model offers a peak power of 370 kW (496 hp) and 1,008 km of CLTC range. The top-trim BYD Da Han AWD offers two electric motors with a combined peak power of 570 kW (764 hp) and 880 km of range.

https://carnewschina.com/2026/07/27/byd-da-han-sedan-with-1008-km-range-revealed-in-official-images/

Will BYD bring it to Thailand? I hope so. if so how much?

Me thinks 1.89MB

I realized something quite shocking regarding the ownership of the MG IM5.

On the IM5, you spend 50%-80% more money on rubber per kilometer than you do on charging the battery.

The gap is so massive, because of the staggered setup (rear 275, front 245), the high instant torque and the weight of 2300 kg.

The cost per KM below, with the Atto 3 as comparison using premium tires like the Dunlop SportMax 060+ Japan made.

Parameter

BYD Atto 3 (Compact EV)

IM5 (Performance EV)

Curb Weight

~1,750 kg

~2,300 kg (+550 kg / +31%)

Wheel / Tire Setup

18-inch Square (235/45 R18)

20-inch Staggered (255/40 & 275/35)

Tire Rotation

Full 4-wheel rotation every 10k-15k km

Side-to-Side ONLY (No front-to-rear)

Typical Set Cost

~14,000 Baht

(Dunlop 060+)

~36,650 Baht (Dunlop 060+)

~48,000 Baht (PZ4)

Real Set Lifespan

~60,000 – 75,000 km

~25,000 – 35,000 km (Rear-limited)

Tire Cost per KM

~0.20 Baht / km

~1.15 – 1.40 Baht / km

Electricity Cost / KM

~0.65 Baht / km (@ 4.2 B/kWh)

~0.76 Baht / km (@ 4.2 B/kWh)

Total cost / KM

Didn't see a price in below article but AI says it will probably be around Bt2.9M.

Nice design but over powered and too expensive. Wish they would offer a more basic version

Can a car even be overpowered? I don’t think so.

Then it would be a BYD, not a Denza.

I'm too practical, or thrifty, maybe just a nice mix of. Even our low tech, old BEV has more hp/torque, even range than we need, or will use.

174 to 177 horsepower (130 kW), 280 Nm of torque, and accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 8.2 secs, and slow by today's standards.

250 kms / 3+ hr range if you can manage ~80 kph, with real nice reserve (~25%). Although our bladder or stomach never make it that far.

Knocking on 3M THB / $90k USD, for 4 wheel transport, that ain't happening. Our house which appreciates, didn't cost that much. Guess I'm just not a car person.

It's definitely for a niche market...a market for the very well off, face means everything, and/or daddy is buying it for me. Lots of folks in such categories and Denza focuses on those categories. Will have to wait and see how many buy a Denza Z9GT shooting break GT.

But hey, Denza is coming out with a Denza Z9S (at least for the China market)...a sedan model....a smaller version of the Z9GT shooting brake version. Pre-sales in China begin 3 Aug 2026...didn't see a projected price but I would guess a little over Bt2M vs the Denza Z9GT at almost Bt3M. Will the Z9S come to Thailand later on?---who knows. A side view looks a lot like the BYD Sealion 7 which costs Bt1.2M to Bt1.3M.

This infographic is made by Claude based on Chinese sources.

It is about NEV sales, ie BEV, PHEV and EREV, while the previous stats was about all car sales. Some Youtube channels report that China has more than 500 NEV models. I have asked Claude to clarify this.

There is also the MG 07 that looks very good and true 800V platform. If it comes to Thailand it would be very nice and give a real hard time to the BYD Seal and Mazda 6E.

A 800v performance car with very good range that looks great and is not expensive is really missing here. The IM5 cost is a bit too high and the facts the tires are crazy expensive for sure will keep buyers hesitant.

https://carnewschina.com/2026/07/21/mg-07-arrives-at-dealerships-across-china-with-840-km-range-and-800v-platform-ahead-of-july-29-pre-sale/

There are still a lot of people who buy for the fun of driving a performance car and who appreciate the technology.

For Face you get a BMW, Mercedes or Porsche in Thailand. Even second hand just to have it.

I so much enjoy the IM5, even with the current tires that are comfy and soft. My next set of tires in 35-40k km will be nail to seal the deal on handling for this car.

IM5 update. Did another 2 long trips going 110-130kmh. The car is good on efficient: I'm getting a consistent 16-17 Wh/km.

Nothing amazing but pretty good for such a big car.

I dunno, I kind of like the look of it for a "kei" type city car.

I don't think Thais are really into micro-sized cars (i.e., a kei type car)....that is, cars smaller than a compact-sized cars such as a Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, etc., compact car.

I know kei cars are popular in Japan due to a variety of society and govt support reasons, but I doubt Thais will embrace them without the govt throwing a lot of support behind them....support significantly above and beyond support currently provided for EV in general.

Personally I wouldn't want to be on Thai highways in a micro-sized car zipping around at 70-90kmh because of reduced ability to protect during a crash....along with drivers probably treating (intentionally or unintentionally) a kei car as more of a motorcycle or tuk-tuk which are more likely to be involved in a crash because of not being seen by drivers. And a big dirt truck or bus driving behind or on the side of me would make me feel like a bug on a busy city sidewalk. However, in Japan where the people do a much, much better job of obeying traffic safety rules/laws the rate of serious traffic accidents is low compared to other countries like Thailand with a high traffic accident rate.

But for low speed driving around city streets where an urban area crash is typically much less destructive and a lot fewer BIG vehicles exist compared to a rural road/highway crash my safety concern wouldn't be nearly as great. Yea, for me, I want more protection in case of a crash than what a micro-sized car provides.

But you did not touch the price of this thing, that is the nail in the coffin 🤣🤣

after taxes and duties will it be 1.0mb?

Honda must be desperate to even try this car here.

Why Did BYD Snub Thailand Again with the 800V Sealion 7 Premium After the Atto 3?

https://paultan.org/2026/07/30/2026-byd-sealion-7-ev-launched-in-malaysia-91-3-kwh-battery-new-base-dynamic-variant-fr-rm163800/

BYD Malaysia has just launched a 800V Sealion 7 Premium, with a larger 91.3 kwh battery for 1.54 M baht. Why is Thailand left behind?

Other 800V offerings in Thailand like Xpeng, IM6 or Zeekr offer a lower price and/or better fast charging.

Or is BYD Rever waiting for a certain amount of installed base of the high power DC chargers as is the case in Malaysia, before they step in?

lower end models can no longer be imported into Malaysia unless they meet 2 requirements

1) 1. Minimum CIF value of RM200,000. CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) is the declared value of the vehicle as it arrives in Malaysia, before any local taxes, duties, distributor margins or dealer markups are applied. Thai Baht Approx B1,640,000

2. Minimum motor power output of 180 kW (equivalent to approximately 245 PS or 241 hp). Any CBU EV with a peak motor output below this threshold cannot be imported and sold in Malaysia.

Article lists which models can no longer be imported in from July 1st 2026

These models are on sale in Malaysia but will stop selling once existing stock as been exhausted or Brands decide to build in Malaysia rather than import

To me it seems byd is focused on eco cars here in Thailand with only the SL7/Seal as premium cars, then expo excess premium for Malaysia due to their new regulations. Maybe byd will export to Malaysia made in Thailand to keep up with the quota.

91kwh is decent size and more appropriate battery for this car, but i think 250kw DC charging for this 800V car is not that great in 2026, but much better overall than low voltage.

Thanks...above is a nice news article....the new Malaysia EV import rules will definitely make many EV models cost a lot more.

And below is another article giving an opinion on why Malaysia decided on the new EV rules....talks Thailand a little bit in the article. Malaysia seems to be opting (hoping) for "short term pain for long term gain." Time will tell.

Here's the Top 30 registered/sold EVs in June 2026. See weblink below for more details.

https://autolifethailand.tv/ev-bev-register-thailand-june-2026/

And here's the top selling EVs for Jan-Jun 2026 sorted by new registrations for the year and at least 1,000 registered in 2026. See weblink for full list/chart.

image.png

Current pricing for EV models seems to favor local-assembly facilities. that were in operation before September 2025 as no minimum on-the-road price is applied to them

Cheapest EV is the Proton e.MAS 5 Prime priced at RM56,800 approx Thai Baht B460,000

For Brands after September 2025 different set of rules apply for

CKD cars are vehicles imported as individual parts and assembled in a local factory. CKD stands for Completely Knocked Down.

Byd for example is being asked to comply with the following

One of the sticking points reportedly involves a requirement for up to 80% of locally assembled vehicles to be exported, with only 20% allocated for the domestic market.

condition imposed for the domestic market is a minimum OTR price of RM100,000 for BYD's CKD vehicles sold domestically

Additional conditions imposed on BYD include a domestic sales cap of 10,000 units per year, representing 20% of total production, prioritisation of exports, and a requirement that assembly processes include in-country body shop, paint, and trim operations.

https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/798058

A domestic sales cap of 10,000 units per year seems to restrict total number of units built to 50,000 per year with 40,000 units for export

Byd Thailand factory as a production target of 150,000 per year

Even if Byd did have a Malaysian local plant for CKD cars the minimum OTR price of RM100,000 or B820,000 would exclude Atto 1,Atto2 Dolphin and standard Atto 3 models
