BANGKOK (NNT) - The Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) has set a target for enticing at least 25 billion baht worth of investments in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) from Japan this year.

Petch Chinabutr, deputy secretary-general of the EECO, made the announcement following the recent visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Thailand this week.

The move aims to attract more EEC investment in areas such as Electric Vehicles (EVs), smart electronics, semiconductors, medical innovations, digital technology, smart farming, and the Bio-Circular-Green industry.

Petch said he was confident that the goal of attracting 25 billion baht worth of investments would be achievable, as the EEC has consistently been an important production zone for Japan.

The EECO deputy secretary-general noted that Thailand particularly wants Japan to invest in EVs and EV batteries.

Petch also said Japanese entrepreneurs will be able to contribute to infrastructural development in the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi) and Eastern Economic Corridor of Digital (EECd).

Notably, most Japanese investments from 2018-2021 were in the EEC. In 2021 alone, these investments were valued at 19.4 billion baht, 64% of which was in the auto industry while 10% was in biotechnology and 8% in petrochemicals.

Lot's of kick-backs there out of the 25 billion. Still that's why the Thai governments have always liked the Japanese

Taken from another article summarising the Japanese PM's visit to the region:

Japan condemned Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine and joined a slew of Western nations in imposing sanctions on Moscow. Thailand, meanwhile, abstained from a United Nations resolution vote to suspend Russia from the U.N. Human Rights Council for alleged human rights abuses in the war in Ukraine.

and

He (Prayuth) said he had a similar approach “to resolve the situation in Myanmar and attached importance to humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar.”

He did not give details about the so-called approach.

Thailand shares a 2,400-kilometer (1,500-mile) long border with Myanmar. It has not outright condemned the coup in Myanmar or the actions of its security forces, which toppled the elected National League for Democracy (NLD) government on Feb. 1, 2021.

Not kick-backs but an array of incentives including lower taxes, tax breaks and cash subsidies for consumers to spur the Japanese corporations to invest more. Toyota, Foxconn, China's GWM are among companies planning to partner local corporations to build factories in EEC. You have much to learn about Japanese business ethics and anti-corruption laws.

Seems like you have even more to learn regarding the Japanese business ethics in Thailand and their Thai partners.
