Authorities in Sisaket in Thailand's north east are investigating after villagers were found with oversized Bang Fai.

These are rockets - usually comprising PVC pipes with bamboo tails packed with home made explosive - used in rocket festivals,  traditional events held mostly in Isaan, notes ASEAN NOW.

The illegal rockets were found in the village of Jansaenchai when officials surrounded the area, reported INN.

Provincial governor Wattana Phuthichart said that the size of rockets is regulated and permission must be sought before rocket festival events can be held.

The events were stopped during the pandemic but are now back with a bang.

'Back with a bang?' Net's hope not! The fact that they are allowed to make home made explosives is enough to make me shudder.

Apparently they want everything to be smaller as this OP says

There is an OK movie about them. Good to watch with wife/GF. Lao with subtitles. IMDb 7.3

It is just wet black powder, compressed by pounding it into the PVC pipes; there is now further special ingredients in this 'explosive'. The rockets then are fired from big wooden rack frames downwind from the village into the empty rice fields there.

If appropriate care is taken, there is very little danger involved.

I have been to a number of rocket festivals and they are generally really great fun and a good opportunity to get to know everybody from the local village and its surrounding. It is the next big event in the Isaan calendar after Songkran and everybody will be there.

Of course, as TiT: know your time to leave, if you see people become too animated (speak: drunk) for their own and your safety. But this is true all over the world where people congegrate to let their hair down.

Should fill-em with homemade hooch and let-em go.

Another miserable official trying to stop people having some enjoyment after 2 years of nothing.

No doubt a follower of the miserable Muppet in chief.

On my bucket list.   Have been to 2 hellfire events and even fired a few small rockets I built.  1 is a 1/2 size Javelin. I guess the government has a reason to be concerned.

When did they institute rules?   I have seen bigger than that on trucks, I think were being taken to a launch site.   Also seen bigger than that being fired off.
