True to his word, new Bangkok governor presses for end of mask wearing outside

New Bangkok governor Chadchart Suttipunt has followed up on previous comments earlier in the week that he would press to end mask wearing in open public spaces in the Thai capital where social distancing was possible. 

 

It would be up to the public whether to wear a face covering or not. 

 

ASEAN NOW notes that many people are doing that already, but there is still confusion about the official advice. 

 

At a meeting yesterday Chadchart proposed the change to areas in public where people could safely be a meter apart as the Covid-19 situation had shown an improvement.

 

However, it's still not official, noted Sanook, who said that the CCSA (Covid steering committee) would be meeting on June 17th when they would further discuss the matter and it was not certain that the governor's wishes would be followed immediately.

Went to a nice place near the Ching Nonsi BTS for lunch today, wont name the place for certain reasons, but when we were leaving a foreign couple tried to enter the building without masks and ended up in a heated exchange with the security guy running the front door entrance to the building because they would not mask up.  Eventually they masked up and after walking through the doors took the masks off.  The security guy just looked away shaking his head.  It seems that many folks, mainly foreigners and probably tourists, do not want to be wearing masks.  Two nights ago while eating at a nice steak house on Sukhumvit, a single foreign lady walked in unmasked, and as she walked to sit down at the bar started hacking and coughing.  The restaurant staff tried to keep her separated from others, but even after being asked she never did put on a mask.  Mask wearing seems to have begun to wear thin on folks.
