An uptick in hospitalisations is linked to two omicron sub-variants– BA.4 and BA.5 – which are now ‘in the ascendancy’

An uptick in Covid hospital admissions in England may herald a new wave of cases caused by omicron sub-variants, according to experts.

According to data published on Friday, hospitalisations have slowly started to climb again, with a 17 per cent jump nationally compared to last week

Although figures remain relatively low – with 577 people admitted on Thursday, compared to over 2,000 a day in early January – experts say we should not be “complacent regarding the direction of travel”, and warn any increase is likely to put more pressure on an NHS already under strain.

Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday that Covid infections across the UK have risen for the first time in two months, with almost 990,000 people estimated to have had the virus in the last seven days – up from 953,900 last week.

I read the Telegraph article, and frankly it was a waste of time.

This just about sums it up:

Prof Oliver Johnson, a mathematician at the University of Bristol, told the Telegraph he was “honestly not too worried”, but said any new wave was worth keeping an eye on. He added that the variants had already swept through South Africa without causing major problems.

Translated: nothing to see here, carry on.

As the cases are no longer overwhelming health services because of the measures taken, there is indeed much to be said for them.

The main measure though, is vaccination not lockdowns, masks, social distancing et al

And until a vaccine was developed and a set number of the population was inoculated they were absolutely necessary and stopped the nhs from being overwhelmed.

Indeed but I replied to what you said ...."there is indeed much to be said for them. "

The "IS" has become "WAS" - you changed tenses between replies. Pedantic, perhaps but very important in this context.

I agree totally pedantic but not at all important in the context of my post.

I say again, the measures were absolutely necessary.

Apart from they set up huge field camps for all the future Covid infected people to go to, to avoid overwhelming the NHS .

Thankfully the measures taken worked and stopped the nhs from being overwhelmed rather than relying on Nightingale hospitals.
