U.S. Senators hail ‘bipartisan breakthrough’ on gun safety legislation

Senate negotiators on Tuesday reached a long-awaited deal on a bipartisan gun safety bill to take firearms away from dangerous people and provide billions of dollars in new mental health funding.

    

The legislation represents a rare moment of bipartisan agreement on the charged issues of gun violence and gun control, breaking nearly 30 years of stalemate on those issues.

 

The bill does not ban assault-style rifles or high-capacity magazines or significantly expand background-check requirements for gun purchases, reforms that were top Democratic priorities a decade ago.

Senators and staff worked through the weekend and said Tuesday afternoon they had resolved all their outstanding disagreements, giving Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) a good chance of passing a bill before the July 4 recess.

A step in the right direction, but let’s hope that the next step is making progress on achieving what was not achieved this time round…

But it does give states more resources to take guns away from dangerous individuals, even if they haven’t been convicted of a crime, and provides billions of dollars in funding for mental health treatment.  

In the aftermath of many of the mass shooting incidents we often learn that the shooters posted plenty of prior warnings on social media sites.

 

(IMHO) All Americans should be encouraged to report these posts - and authorities should be empowered to act immediately to remove any weapons from the posters. Yes, even without any further evidence of intent to do harm.

 

If they want their weapons returned, they need to explain themselves to the Courts.

Nowhere near enough. And with the supreme court about to loosen restrictions even more, it will only get worse. 

 

Since everyone there now owns and carries(at least in their car) a gun, what used to be settled in a fist fight now becomes a mass shooting event, many occurring each week at bars all over the USA.

 

No idea what the answer is, but this isn't it.

 

Is the US on travel advisories over this yet? It should be.

I tend to agree.... I've been perplexed by the pretty heavy amount of positive media coverage over this current legislation, considering how relatively little it would do... 

 

But then again, considering how little to nothing Congress has done with dealing with the proliferations of guns and mass shootings through the years, I guess even a little something done now would be something.

 

Congrats Congress.... until the next mass shooting comes along.  ????

This is beginning to look like another GOP rope-a-dope: lead the Dems by the nose and make them think something is going to get done, and then just let it flop.

In this case the Senate is taking the lead, and the House will p_ss on it, it usually works the other way around.

Before this legislation it seems that there were no real effective control over access to these weapons of choice for mass shootings.

I'm not an American. You may of course think that it is none of my business, but like very many people worldwide (including within the United States) I am sickened by the ongoing slaughters of the innocents, and cannot comprehend the apparent fetish for owning and displaying such weapons. Along with the apparent lack of interest amongst politicians in removing them from society.

Senate bipartisan gun safety bill clears key hurdle as final vote could come later Thursday

 

(CNN)  A major bipartisan gun safety bill moved one step closer to final passage in the Senate on Thursday after a critical vote succeeded in advancing the measure with Republican support.

 

The vote was 65-34, and 15 GOP senators joined Democrats to break the filibuster.

The legislation is now on a path to pass the Senate before the week is out -- with the potential for a final vote to take place as early as later Thursday, though it could slip until Friday.

 

The bipartisan gun deal represents the first major federal gun safety legislation in decades. It includes millions of dollars for mental health, school safety, crisis intervention programs and incentives for states to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
