Marijuana users and sellers being highly responsible - no need for draconian measures - more specific laws out by August

The spokesman for the House committee formulating laws and regulations connected to the legalization of marijuana and hemp has praised the reaction of weed users and sellers so far.

Panthep Phuapongphan said in a Facebook post that users had been behaving responsibly and so had those selling the drug.

Dispensaries and vans selling marijuana have popped up all over Thailand much to the surprise of both proponents and detractors to legalization that came in on June 9th.

Fears in some quarters that there would be a damaging free-for-all have been completely unfounded, notes ASEAN NOW. Our investigations have shown high levels of responsible use.

This points to the chilled attitude of people who have habitually used the drug while it has been illegal. Weed users know the score though they accept that more education is needed to bring non-users into the fold.

Panthep said that the reaction to June 9th came as no surprise, the committee were expecting some confusion from people who have little knowledge about marijuana.

Such "dinosaurs" have been trying to stir up trouble in online forums  including ASEAN NOW but have been batted into touch by sensible users. Their "Reefer Madness" observations have been dismissed though a divide remains.

Panthep said there were plenty of regulations in place in the interim before laws are promulgated and there was no need for a Royal Decree or use of the Emergency Decree at all.

Regulations such as not allowing smoking in public places, restriction on youth access under the age of 20 and Ministry of Public Health rules about controlled herb use were all sufficient for now.

The public, police, ministries and shops were all playing their part. Everyone was chilling.

The committee is due to report their recommendations by August, reported Siam Rath

Thank God that common sense is prevailing.

Keep it on the Downlow and No Public Use and we can do this and enjoy it…. Don’t stick it in the Coppers Faces

For a change. So far so good. May cooler heads prevail - on both sides of the “divide.” It’s ours to lose. I think l’ve met my quota for cliches. If you need me, I think you know where I’ll be, and precisely what l’ll be doing.

A touch of reality.

I recently check out five dosed-up reefer smokers from a villa.

When I arrived at the villa, all five were comatose in their beds. They had to be out of the villa within 45 minutes - next guests were due and we needed to clean and disinfect the villa.

It took 90 minutes to get them dressed, packed and out.

It took one guest 10 minutes of 'wobbling' trying to put his feet in the legs of his pants.

They then proceeded to get on their rental scooters (not an easy task) to return them to the rental company.

One guest fell off before he got to the end of the road.

Yes, an extreme case of 'too much wacky baccy' but they were a danger on the roads.

I am 100% sure that this is not the only case of idiocy here in Thailand, but the majority of them will never make the newspapers.

can you confirm that they had indeed smoked cannabis recently before scooting away ? is it possible they could of been drinking or drunk still from the night before ? on any number of other drugs available in thailand ?

generally people who smoke don't get wobbly legs or drop a scooter while riding away. that loss of motor function usually comes from alcohol or narcotics.

your reefer madness mindset offers up a good idea of your thoughts about the entire situation before you even had information.

im willing to bet there is far more to this story that you are not aware of. all of which INCLUDING and not solely because of the cannabis use lead to the events that happened.

It's going to take the older conservative righteousnos to get used to marijuana.

Totally harmless and natural.

Just wait till high season hits - it's handstand bong hits in the streets for the backpackers.

They just might have got their hands on some KIEF ?

My thai friend is very happy,he was inside for this offence. Now legal  and he can grow it  and smoke it without looking over his shoulder

People who have been smoking pot here that was maybe 3-6% THC could possibly have a problem with gear that's being sold containing 20-30% THC. I've smoked heads before that knocked me on my <deleted> because it was way stronger that what I was usually getting, also it sounds like they might have just had a session before you tried to vacate them. Just a thought

Something more than cannabis going on in this story. Why do people make up these stories anyway?

No sign of alcohol.

Marijuana 'debris' and cigarette makings on the dining room table.

So they were drunk?

Keeping selling the dream guys. Do not worry - it is totally harmless.

In twenty years of being in the hospitality business, I have seen all kinds of drugs and yes, both the cleaning team and I know what we saw.

I wonder if they were like me, used the evil weed some time ago but not used to modern potency.

I would not know what to expect as I understand weed is 100 times stronger than in the past.

My mental clarity is sketchy enough that I have no plans to try weed again.

Strange how many lives ruined by alcohol but no debate on banning it or limiting its use to 2 % 4% 6% . And to stop selling it for a few hours a day is kinda strange too .

Yip, they lost that nice little racket though they will evolve...seller probably intertwined with arresting officer = the (former) real payday of that interaction.

I really wish people would stop using personal anecdotes to try and justify their stance on this matter. Yes, some people will not act responsibly but that's exactly the same for alcohol (much more I would suggest) and any other drug you care to mention. This idea that the minority dictates the majority does not hold up under scrutiny as this article clearly demonstrates that the VAST majority are acting responsibly and are doing the 'right' thing when it comes to weed.

I predict this will be the norm but yes, there will be the odd idiot who does too much or gets themselves into unnecessary trouble by not acting responsibly. But isn't this the way of the world anyhow?

I don't understand this guy either. Most people reading this have at some point smoked pot. So this story just does not sound true. Not least of which your working in Thailand checking guests in and out of their villas. I seriously question that as well.

If you don't like the new liberal marijuana laws then fine but I don't think your going to convince too many people with this story.

That being said over on one of the other threads there are people posting that they will continue wearing masks because they are such virtuous people. So I dunno some people will believe anything.
