Does HH have a problem with sandflies?

I have a severe allergic reaction to bites from these critters.

I know that Chumpon and Surat has them from experience.

Hoping that HH might be spared.

Usually, the reaction to sandfly bites becomes less with more exposures, unless you are one of those unfortunates with a sensitized immune response.

I seem to remember you were having considerable problems after urinary surgery, is that improved now?

You have a great memory.

No my issues were not resolved, I have continual problems  with urethral stricture disease and constantly get UTI's, and one of the reasons I want to relocate , or at least have a base in HH is because  I have zero confidence in CM urologists.

 

We have found condos within a stones throw of Bangkok Hospital.

Before I made the move I would check out the urologists in HH.

Do you know what they are like?

Sorry, no. Have never been to Hua Hin.

 

Did you try Dr. Wittawat Rawiyotai at Bangkok Hospital in Chiang Mai? He does my regular cystoscopies, I've found him to be very professional.

 

Failing that, I understand Bumrungrad in Bangkok is world-class, albeit very expensive.

Yes I have been everywhere you have mentioned.

The worse areas that I have found for Sandflies is Koh Samet and Koh Chang.

We go to Hua Hin often and have not found the sandflies to be an issue. 

 

That said - between mozzies and sandflies there is plenty to bite us and make the evenings uncomfortable. 

We are vigilant with our son and ourselves (Wife and I), but in over 25 years I have not found any pattern, sometimes the go for me more, sometimes my Wife, some I’ve been eating spicy food, sometimes I haven’t... I’m not even sure its seasonal..... 

 

But, they’re there and the only thing that works is to keep applying the repellant with deet.

I got done very badly in Koh Chang three months ago  the bite lumps were huge and took a month to go down.

You should be OK just walking along the beach, I never had a bite in all of the time I spent there.

 

I knew someone who did the old bury-my-boyfriend-in-the-sand and the next day he had dozens of nasty welts from the sandflies that were underneath the sand.

Don’t know about HH , but I can vouch for Khao Takiab having them about a month ago. I sat on the sand for about 20 minutes and got mauled. Trouble is , you don’t feel the buggers biting you at the time and I seem to be in a minority that’s is troubled by them.

Taking antihistamines and using a cortisol based ointment were a dealbreaker for me after sandflea bites.

HH and Cha-Am have in past had problems with Sandfleas. Are they the same? See, I'm not knowledgeable. I haven't been there in 20 years. I wish you the best!

Just returned from Hua Hin where we visited many of the beaches.  Never noticed any sandflies while there.

They seem to be seasonal in HH because I seem to find some periods where I’m left alone. But when they’re around they’re absolutely nasty. I was there earlier this week and didn’t have a problem.

Hello i had attack a few years back locals told me to rub coconut oil on which i did no more bit’s.

Don’t laugh at me but a few days ago I heard that WD 40 stops mozzie bites itching! Dunno about sandfly bites though

they are not sand-flies but sand flees or sea lice nasty little critters can barely see them with the naked eye, Mossy spray around your ankles works. In the past I had some 'din' delivered full of the dam things and if you pick the lumps then infection sets in, still have scars from years ago. I didn't feel the bites until the next day. Only encountered them on beaches at night while sitting around tables.

DanaDeLuxe.  Sorry could you elaborate.  When you say that the antihistamines and the other application were deal breakers are you saying that these were total cures?  Thanks.

Avon Skin So Soft Lotion is what the US Marines recommend to keep sand flies away.

I'll agree with that and bore you all with my personal experience.

 

About 40 years ago I went there ( Ko Samet ) with a Canadian biker friend. 

At that time the island was totally undeveloped. 

 

Getting off the ferry we got on the motorcycle trike ( only one ) across the island to the main beach.

 

It was basic in the extreme and the bungalow we ended up renting ( best available ) was made totally of bamboo and thatch. This was elevated from the beach about a meter and there were no doors , windows or mosquito netting. Only other tourist on the beach was an attractive French woman in her 20's

 

At night it was very dark with low 25 wattage bulbs here an there run by a generator. There were no cement buildings at all and only one place to eat run by the owner of the hooches.

 

My friend and I got totally wasted on Mekong and weed and became very loud, much to French woman's amusement. By and by I was in a sorry state and crawled off into the night like Captain Oates to dig a hole and regurgitate the contents of my stomach.

 

I had barely got started in earnest when a pack of wild puppy dogs emerged from the jungle to feast on the erstwhile contents of my stomach whilst also licking my mouth and face in eager anticipation of pudding I suppose.

 

Both my friend and the French girl declared it the funnies thing they had ever seen because of my pathetic attempts to shoo off my new fans whilst simultaneously emptying my stomach.

 

So....to sand flies.

 

After this excitement I crawled off to my basher , drank a bottle of water and passed out.

 

The next day when I awoke, my friend and the French girl were covered in sand fly bites which left nasty bumps all over them from head to foot like the chocolate hills of Bohol.

 

I was completely unbitten.....not a bite on me.

 

Which to me illustrated that sandflies can smell a <deleted> up fool a hundred yards away.
