webfact Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 Thailand’s Consumer Council (TCC), a non-profit consumer protection network, has voiced its strong objection to the planned 59-baht maximum train fare for the two extended routes of the BTS sky train system, or Green Line, claiming that the maximum fare should not exceed 44 baht. TCC Secretary-General Saree Aongsomwang also proposed yesterday (Tuesday) that the maximum fare on the Green Line should be reduced to 25 baht for the entire route, from Khu Khot in Pathum Thani province to Kheha in Samut Prakan province, after the expiry of the contract between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and BTS, for the latter to operate the sky train service, in 2029. The opposition comes after Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who oversees the controversial concession extension and fare issues, said on Wednesday that he agrees with the Thailand Development Research Institute Foundation’s (TDRI) proposal of capping the maximum fare at 59 baht. EricTh Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 (edited) Just look at the horrific traffic jam in Bangkok and you'll know whether the BTS ticket fares are acceptable to most Thai people or not. It seems that they keep on raising the price of BTS instead of reducing it to be more affordable to the common fols. Edited June 29, 2022 by EricTh 2

Come on the BTS is cheap especially when you consider the traffic and what a taxi would cost for just about any trip 1 3

The objective of the train systems is to reduce road traffic which it has failed to do. Local Thai people would rather ride their motorbikes or cars which are cheaper in the long run. How many Thai's do you see with cars, motorbikes etc? If they can afford a car I doubt if the increase would kill them 1

Yes it 100% fails its objective. It should be susidised.

The purpose of a mass transit system is for the average Thai person to commute to work, it's not for the rich. Buying a small car is not the same as buying an expensive car. The middle-class Thai can afford to buy a small car but would prefer to use public transport if the BTS fare was cheaper due to the heavy traffic jam. Edited June 29, 2022 by EricTh 1
warrima Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 I only find the BTS economical if its just myself traveling. If its the family (+ Mrs & kiddo) then taxi makes way more sense.
The Alien Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Thai government should copy Germany’s way of helping the people and solve horrible traffic congestion and skyrocketed fuel prices. “Germany's parliament has set summer train fares at 9 euros per month in a bid to slash pollution and curb imports of Russian oil by spurring drivers to take public transit.” 1

For you perhaps with a much higher income the BTS is a reasonable price but for a Thai who is living and working in BKK it is a lot of money every day. 22 hours ago, Photoguy21 said: Agreed. Now try comparing the Skytrain trip with the London Underground against the average daily wage for London commuters' https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/new-fares?intcmp=34454
unblocktheplanet Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Way too high. Make it a 50-baht bill. That's plenty for the greedheads. This is a public service & govt should act as such, and enforce it.
