Though damages can be claimed by women who are dumped at the altar, there is a catch. Under Thai law, jilted brides can only seek financial remedy if they were engaged to the man. (Photo by Soroush Karimi)

Women are said to be happiest and most beautiful on their wedding day, with the love of their life by their side. However, many brides are left shocked and in tears when the groom breaks off the relationship suddenly and without warning. The emotional damage can be huge – but the financial penalty can be even bigger when wedding arrangements and dowries are taken into consideration.

One such “ghosted” bride said she had been in a relationship for nine years when she suddenly realized that their time together meant little to her partner, who dumped her just before their marriage.

Some people might say that their love faded over time and that the “spark” burns brighter with newfound love.

Yet in reality, even a months-old passionate relationship can collapse on the wedding day.

Doesn't the financial cost of the wedding & the dowry fall upon the man?

In any event, this article seems to be suggesting a return to a system not unlike the Victorian times in Europe when the men had to pay a huge price for breaching an engagement.

Even some compensation for a man breaching contract by not marrying is unacceptable in modern times.  She could walk away at any time and find somebody more generous... and foolish.

All is fair in love and war.

The remnant of the dowry, in the US is that the bride’s family pays the cost of the wedding, which can run into the thousands of dollars. Ha! I recall explaining to Thai girls, on occasion that her family wold (in the west historically) be expected to present a dowry. The look on their faces in reaction was priceless!

A German guy I once knew took a fancy to a local lass with two young kids...

asking what he should do about the family asking for a 200,000 baht dowry at the wedding.

I said say thanks but no thanks and keep looking.

I never understand why the birth of a male is so celebrated in Thailand.  Mothers and grandmas dote on them allowing him to flex his muscles on his female siblings.  Then the family spoil the brat even more by lavishing a feast on his entry to the monkhood so he can sit around smoking all day.  Next comes the Sin Sot dowry to be followed by the birth of a child before he moves on to pastures new leaving the family to pay for the new grandchild.
