Siem Reap Prahok Earns GI Status in Boost for Cambodia's Heritage
KT Heang Chivoan Cambodia has officially granted Geographical Indication (GI) status to Siem Reap prahok, a traditional fermented fish paste, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to preserve cultural heritage and support rural economies. The announcement came as part of celebrations for World Intellectual Property Day 2025, with a ceremony attended by senior government ministers, development partners, and EU representatives. The recognition not only safeguards a centuries-old culinary tradition but also boosts the product’s value and global visibility. “This is more than a label — it’s a promise of quality and authenticity that links our past with our future,” said Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce and chair of Cambodia’s National Committee for Intellectual Property. “With GI status, we protect our cultural assets while empowering our local producers.” GI certification, widely used in Europe to designate products linked to specific regions, ensures that Siem Reap prahok — known for its distinct taste and deep roots in the Angkor-era diet — will now enjoy legal protection and marketing advantage both at home and abroad. The move is part of an EU-funded initiative under the CAPFISH-Capture project, led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration. The aim is to improve post-harvest practices and boost income for small-scale producers through better branding and sustainable resource use. EU Ambassador Igor Driesmans highlighted the broader significance of GIs for rural economies. “They preserve traditions, support smallholders, and promote sustainability,” he said, noting that Europe has over 3,500 registered GIs. “We are proud to have supported Cambodia’s GI system for over a decade.” Siem Reap prahok joins a growing list of Cambodian GI products, including Kampot pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar, and Mondulkiri wild honey. Officials say these designations improve product traceability, enhance export potential, and align with national strategies for agricultural and economic development. As Minister of Agriculture Dith Tina put it: “This recognition strengthens our food identity and opens new market opportunities while honouring traditional practices.” With its new GI status, Siem Reap prahok is set to become a symbol of Cambodia’s culinary pride — and a bridge between heritage and sustainable development. -2025-05-06
