A group of 38 traders, resort owners and restaurant owners from Mae Rampung beach and Koh Samet files for damages in the sum of more than 38 million baht over the oil spill that severely damaged the Rayong coast back in January.

The claims are against Star Petroleum Refining Co Ltd or SPRC.

Leading the case are businesswomen Sompong Sirimha and Thanyalak Rattanaphan along with a total of 38 people who are asking for 38,834,175 baht in damages incurred to their businesses.

Yesterday they were pictured with their two lawyers and other representatives from the tourism and business sectors outside the court in Rayong.

Lawyer Rat Kanphai said that the court had received the claim and investigations would follow in what is a civil case.

He said that many more claims would follow against the company by other groups.

Thai Rath reported that seven months of negotiations with the petroleum company had stalled with claimants saying they did not feel the company was genuine in providing relief.

Hence the matter is now being dealt with in the courts.

ASEAN NOW notes that an oil slick from a pipeline devastated large swathes of the mainland and the holiday island of Koh Samet back in January and February of this year.
