Thai media Sanook said that Twitter users were calling for the arrest of a foreign man who posted what they called a "brazen video" of himself catching fish in the sea in Thailand.

 

The hashtag #farangjapplanokkaew (caucasian man catching parrot fish) was trending at number one in Thailand.

 

He'd posted a TikTok video. In his right hand hand the media said he had a moray eel. In his left several parrot fish. 

 

Netizens said he intended to catch such fish as he had a whole bunch of them. It was no accident, they claimed.

 

Twitter users wanted to know if the boat captain had advised him about what he could and couldn't do while others said he should be aware himself. 

 

Many wanted the foreigner's arrest.

 

Many said that parrot fish were an important part of the marine ecosystem especially in their ability to help coral propagate. 

 

Sanook noted that parrotfish are not a protected species but it is illegal to fish in national marine parks and take away or hurt animals there.

 

The clip was removed by the foreigner at 6 pm. 

 

ASEAN NOW notes that the background to the pictures suggests it may have occurred in Krabi, southern Thailand. 

 

Some years ago a Hungarian man who was deported and an Italian got into terrible trouble after filming themselves playing with sea slugs underwater off Koh Phangan.

 

Over the years environment minister Varawut Silpa-archa has reacted swiftly and decisively in such cases.

I have an idea for the irate Netizens to ponder over. Why not arrest the Thai captain, and all his crew for allowing it to happen in the first place. If there is a law being broken, then they would be more knowledgeable than the Foreigner, therefore more culpable.

I assume they understand that Parrot fish decimate coral reefs. Not that I agree with him catching all of the ones he shows in the photo but just thought I would add that fishy fact.

I assume these netizins in "uproar" are fully aware and literate about the  role the Thai fishing industry has played in IUU (Illegal, Unregulated Unreported) fishing over the past years in Thailand waters which has decimated local fish stocks. I applaud their uproar and concern for Marine life. Maybe they could direct their rage at the local fishing industry which is cause significantly more damage than a single person fishing with presumably a rod and line. 

 

This is positively stupid. I've seen Parrotfish in --- - supermarket and it was labeled as such.

 

There's worse meat but its not great. Should get nice fillets though.

The issue is that they are reef fish.

 

Years ago i was on a snorkel boat with a woman that happened to work for the Fisheries Dept. I remarked that the qty of fish traps in the NP was ridiculous and she ought to sort it out. She laughed and said ... I don't want to die.

There's a long record of foreigners trashing Thai reefs and disregarding the laws in nature parks.

Looks like the fishing was done around Phi Phi, which AFAIK is a national park. Fishing is prohibited there. Otherwise the parrot fish is not protected and is quite common in the reefs, I vaguely remember being sold at Sydney's fish markets(rarely). Not a protected specie in Australia.

A stupid,  insensitive  foreigner, possibly hunting illegal angers me not just Thais. The photo is revolting. A quite unacceptable,  unnecessary  large catch.

Fishing is not allowed in the marine parks, in theory all species are protected. So if it happened in the protected area he can be prosecuted.

Parrot Fish eat the algae off coral and in-turn the coral thrives.
