webfact Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported that an eight month old male baby elephant had drowned in a water hole adjacent to the Khao Ang Rue Nai wildlife sanctuary that straddles five provinces in eastern/central Thailand. The elephant was part of a large herd of about 40 pachyderms that had caused widespread damage to locals' orchards and crops after they arrived for a feast in the middle of the night on Saturday. Picture: Siam Rath A farmer pointed to where it happened in a 15x40m pond that is about 1.5 meters deep. The elephants left a great deal of destruction and their excrement. Tarteso Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 I Don’t understand this “point”..Elephant dung is an incredibly energy-rich organic fertiliser. The waste products of herbivores can be used to generate gas for stoves, heat and even electricity. ???? 2
CelticBhoy Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 "Locals want compensation for the damage to their livelihoods." A few words to express sorrow for the drowned baby elephant first would have been nice. Then again, these lovely locals could well of had a hand in the "drowning," methinks. 1 1

khunPer Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 Keeping wild animals is a difficult balance – difficult for both animals and farmers.

IvorBiggun2 Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 As BBQ'd meat alone it should cover their losses. Get cooking. 1
hotchilli Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 15 hours ago, nobodysfriend said: Not possible that a water loving elephant drowns in a 1,5m deep pool Maybe it got stuck in soft mud, or couldn't get out, exhaustion set in and it drowned after falling over? 1.5 meters of water is more than deep enough to drown in when you're belly-up.
